Oil cooler install pics

Recommended Posts

Keywords = MK1 Golf gt1 water pipe hose heat exchanger delete OE part number

Finished it today... actually ran the car for the first time in 3 weeks!! Water pump, timing belt, deleted AC, rebuilt G60, fuel filter, etc etc etc... but enough of that I want to show off my oil cooler install :D

Deleted stock oil/water cooler, put in Mocal sandwich plate with 180deg internal thermostat, and new coolant hoses that bypass the stock cooler, and all new milspec stainless hose clamps (bye bye OEM clamps - hate em)

Mocal 19 row installed directly on radiator with isolating felt pads and custom made nomex-over-ss-braid hoses and 90deg reusable fittings....

Tight fit but very nice fit I think. Bit of foam on the front of the cooler to isolate vibration from the slam panel

Done! Note my nice VW Platinum Grey G-Lader, rebuilt to Stage3 by Kompressor Kanada :D

Tommorow I just have to bolt the bumper back on and top up the fluids again, tighten up the belts and check for leaks again, and its off for a test drive!

Thanks! Yes, I picked that position because there is still plenty of room at the bottom of the radiator for a long narrow FMIC when I get around to that

Be VERY careful not to over-tighten aluminium fittings!!

Use grease on threads during fittings assembly, and hose construction.

For a tutorial on making hoses get the Pegasus Racing catalogue:

http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pdfs/068.pdf

Parts list for my oil cooler setup:

1 x Mocal SP1T sandwich plate (3/4-16 thread, 180F t-stat)

1 x Mocal MOC-19210 oil cooler (13" x 19 row, AN-10 fittings)

1 x Oil cooler to radiator mounting kit

2 x 1/2" NPT male to AN-10 male fittings

4 x 90deg AN-10 reusable swivel fittings (ie Aeroquip FCM4034)

6' or more, oil cooler hose (about $5/foot, 300F 1000psi or higher) *

* I used Weatherhead nomex covered hose, but you can use other kinds.

Just make sure the 90deg reusable fittings will fit the hose!

New coolant hoses, to delete stock oil heat exchanger:

1 x 026 121 053G

1 x 068 121 063M

Golf oil filter pipe stud for fitting Mocal oil sandwich plate:

1 x 059 115 721

Total cost around USD $300

Bought most of the stuff from http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/

I have just put a 13 row Mocal cooler on mine last weekend and the results are incredible. I've mounted mine to the left side of the radiator if you are looking at the car front on. It's a must have modification to any tuned Corrado and one that doesn't cost the earth. Mine worked out to be about £130 all in and to have a running temperature of around 90c has got to be good for te engine.

Just got back from my test drive up and down the hills around here, can't go over 3500 rpm until the g-lader is broken in, but before I was seeing temps of 220-230F and now I'm seeing 200-205F (93C).... woohoo :D
