Still pinking???

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps,

Just wandering if anybody can help me with my G60 golf. The engine is a 2ltr rallye with a cat by-pass. The engine pinks all the time when driving despite replacing the knock sensor and trying different fuels and addatives. Each tuner i take it too seems to set the Fuel/ air and timing to different settings.

Does anybody know what these should be set at and if this will cure the pinkning problems.

Cheers

Tom

You may have a weak fuel pump that is not delivering the quantity of fuel needed causing the engine to run lean. Does pinking occur off boost or only when the car is under load conditions? Try and get the fuel pressure tested, this is done by attaching a fuel pressure gauge to the end of the fuel rail where the enrichment switch is usally plumbed on. You should be looking for figures in the region of 40-50psi on idel and going up to 65-70psi on boost and the car holding those levels i.e. fuel pressure does not drop off as the engine rpm rises if you keep your foot to the floor.

It is possible to mask the problem by retarding ignition timing, but this is not a cure as pinking will only come back as the fuel pump grows weaker over time.

What engine/block is your 2litre based around?

Has the ECU been set up for the 2L engine, or is it still running the 1.8 map?

What size pulley are you running, and does the ECU map know about that too?

Have you checked the cam timings and made sure that your cam belt is on properly with all of the timing marks lined up properly?

And, as Beavis mentioned, is your fuel pump noisy at all, and have you checked it out...

Continuous pinking is a sign of something REALLY not right, especially if it's on an engine with a knock sensor... :?

Hope you get it sorted... Answer some of the above and I'm sure someone here may be able to point you in the correct direction... 8)

As Henny, points out with the above I was assuming your car is set up with the relevent ECU map for the mods you have, if this is so have you always had the problem or has it only just developed? Did the problem arise or was exagerated after fitting any given mod to the engine.

Cheers for the reply chaps,

The engine was taken from a rallye and has had a capacity increase. It is running a 68mm pulley, M-R G-ladder, cat by-pass, and a jabba chip. I haven't had the car long so i have no idea if the chip has been set up correctly.

I took the car to a G60 specialist at the weekend because the car was not running quite right, it was pinking slightly when i took it in.

The mechanic is unsure what to set the timing up to and what to adjust the A/F to. The knock sensor was found to have a damaged lead so that was replaced and he set the car up. Since then however the car pinks badly only under load. To be honest ther fuel pump sounds sweet but i will check the delivery pressure.

I would like to fit a sns stage 5 chip and get the car set up correctly.

Have you guys any idea what i to set the timing and A/F to in the mean time?

Thanks

Tom

if you are runnnig a 2l then id expect you need lots of ufel to match the air.

a set of red tops may come in handy and a SNS 5 chip

our fuel pump is pretty weak though

If you're still using the 8v fuel pump then this might be the cause of the problem since as Gazza mentioned, they are weak! It will not provide the necessary flow for your capacity.

Best thing is to upgrade to a 16v pump.
