later wings are wider- but how do you tell whether it's wide

I've done a search and confirmed that the later wings are wider than the early ones but is there any way to tell which one it is when it's off the car and the person who has them doens't know how old the car was?!

 

Or is it a case of literally getting a later spec one and comparing it side by side to see any noticable difference?! And would it be obvious when donig this?!

You'd have a job to tell just by looking at a wing, but if you had an early and a late one side by side, you can notice the difference.

The rear wheel arches have a narrower lip around the top 2/3 of the arch, whereas the earlier cars have a consistent width lip, not sure if the fronts are similarly shaped?
