My Car Unlocks Itself!!!

Recommended Posts

i have put a replacement doorhandle on the drivers side of my car (the first replacement its ever had) and ever since when i lock the car from the drivers side everything locks fine but give it 10 to 20 seconds it then unlocks itself again!!

if i lock it from the passenger side with the original doorhandle, lock and key it stays locked...... i just don't understand it!

has anyone else had this problem that has been successfully fixed?

let me know with any help you can.

Cheers

Did you use the correct handle, there are early and late ones? some also have a small wiring loom with plug that fits into a socket halfway down the door. Check these first before spending any more money. Otherwise it could be an alarm fault.

hi jim,

the wiring loom fits the plug half way down the door fine, but when i got it i didn't check whether it was an early or late one. saying that i did buy it from VW, unless they made the mistake...they were the only suppliers of VW parts in Dubai!

car was bought there but its garaged at the mo, trying to get it registered and on the UK roads now that i can afford it.

would the handle type explain why i couldnt change the barrel of the old handle to the new one so i dont have to use a different key?

car doesnt have an alarm yet but thats certainly a 1st on the agenda of things to do!

You can tell from the outside if its early or late, the later ones have a groove around the lock to stop keys slipping / scratching - they changed the outside but as far as I know there still the same inside - still break!

I think its more likely you have a faultly lock switch or the lock barrel is not quite in right.

Having never dimantled a leter style handle, i cant be sure. To change the lock barrel on an early handle you have to remove the circlip from the back of the barrel and then ease it out without losing all the little bits. The easily recognisable differene between early and late handles is tha the late handle has a rised lip around the lock barrel on the outside.

hope this helps

I have an early style handle ie no lip on my drivers side and it works fine.

Has the necessary wires and the full closure works as well.

cheers guys,

the handle is the right one then cos theres no lip around the lock. the new handle wouldnt take the old lock though when i pulled them both appart cs there was a missmatched groove or something, cant remember now. the lock barrel is in ok though it went back in with nothing changed to when i took it out.

bit puzzling then!
