Replace gearstick housing

Recommended Posts

Is this a major job?.. my stick is worn to hell... wobbling... don't need to push down for reverse... etc etc

I need to replace the entire gear stick housing... on the Corrado it's a plastic stick in an aluminium box (so welding it out the window)... I believe it comes in a single box unit.

Anyone ever had to replace this?... any idea of the price... VW are coming back to me with a price tomorrow... and I'm nervous to say the least!

The whole gearstick housing has to be removed from underneath. So it involves removing the centre section of the exhaust (and possibly the downpipe depending on how much room is needed to get the housing out). The exhaust heat shield also has to be removed. But once that is all out of the way there are just two bolts underneath and two inside the cab to remove along with the cables from the gearbox end.

I'd say a min of two hours labour + parts. It's not that difficult of a job, it is quite messy though!

If you had a weekend to spare you could do the job yourself to save some money! And I'm sure someone on here who's breaking a car would have a decent spare gear mech!?!?

Could save Christmas that way!

Live in Dublin... so little hope... will let you know what price I get quoted tomorrow!!!

And there I was laughing to myself thinking I'd only spent £150 and labour on parts all year!!! cheers again!

(off to get drunk!)
