Danger Mouse 0 Posted November 16, 2003 Hey everyone, I hope someone has encountered this one. Every time I switch my C on in the morning after its been in bed all night there is a strong smell of petrol. I opened the bonnet yesterday morning as soon as I swithched her on to see what the problem was. The fuel regulater pipe, (at least I think that is what it is) seems to have a small 'puddle', for lack of a better word, of petrol lying on a bracket behind the main part of the engine. As the car is ticking over I can see droplets of petrol falling onto the engine and being evapourated by the heat consequently causing copious amounts of smoke. I am worried about the heat of the engine ignighting the petrol and basically frying my engine. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?? Regards in advance DM
Henny 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Change the pipe clip for a new jubilee clip, and possibly the piece of pipe for a new one... The spring clips that VW use for holding pipe on tightly are pants and loosen with age as the spring steel becomes looser... Also, the fuel pipes are renowned for becoming porus near to the ends and letting fuel leak out. I had the same problem on my G60 after I put the new head on it and I was as worried about it catching fire as you seem to be. Get it sorted soon... Fuel fires in the engine bay aren't funny... :? stevemac 0 Posted November 17, 2003 I would have it fixed before you drive it again. If it catches fire, it will fry your whole car - not just your engine. Given what you've said, I'm surprised it hasn't caught fire already !!
julesz 0 Posted November 17, 2003 Hey Thomas. I had this problem too. I removed the pipe and re attached it and all seemed fine. For a temporary measure, if you get the pipe and push it hard towards the engine, youll find it slides on to the connector a tiny bit more, (needs a good old shove). It seems it works itself off over time. This should stop the petrol leaking out enough for you to drive it for a couple of days. There again, dont take my word for it - i dont want you having a fire
Henny 0 Posted November 17, 2003 new clip + new pipe = £10 max + 20mins fitting time... New engine bay wiring + other repairs due to engine fire = how much was your car?!? :? You know it makes sense to sort it properly... 8)
