G60 not starting after extended 'rest'

Recommended Posts

How do folks,

Trying to help a friend start their '91 G60 which has been sitting on their driveway for circa 2 years without running. Have now managed to turn the engine over but will not fire.

Changed sparks for new, gave it a little drink (5l of SUL), checked spark at plug and can smell fuel in the exhaust after trying to start it - although it's a weak smell.

My VW experience is pretty limited - Toyotas (MR2 GT and Turbo), Vauxhalls (Cavalier and Astra GSi) and Land Rovers (Defender 90 Tdi)are what I'm used to dealing with - apart from servicing the Mrs naturally asthmatic Golf 1.8 auto.

Anyone got a magic bullet fix or at least some hints on where to start with this wee beastie?

Cheers,

Adam.

Thanks for the reply - nice fat spark from each plug but no fuel present. Suspect the in tank pump may be mullered - it was sitting with the tank empty for 2 years after all - looking into replacing that next.

Just been speaking to the owner - as the car ill need replacement discs, pads, tyres and possibly calipers all round (which is going to cost circa £400) they may well be scrapping it.

Will let you lot know before I let 'em take it to a scrappy ;)

Cheers,
