Power Steering

Recommended Posts

The power steering on my Vr makes a hissing noise when you turn the wheel. Is this normal???

Anyone any suggestions on how to diagnose this problem (seals on power steering pump???)

Is this with the car stationary, or while it's moving?

Power steering will complain about having to turn the wheels when the car is stationary, and this could make a sound kind of like a hissing noise... It shouldn't be very loud and shouldn't be audible while moving...

Its not very loud but i can here it when going round roundabouts.

What do you reckon?

I have also got a rough idle despite new plugs, leads and coil pack. I can feel almost constant tiny vibrations through the steering wheel like little misfires. Drives spot on but if i rev it to about 1500 revs it is rough, i.e more vibrations. Surely VR's were not all like this when new???

what is your idle like??

Is it worth chucking money at it? VW dont have a clue but i found a website with a list of VW recalls/known problems and it lists one for the VR6 which reads exactly as follows: -

Daignosis "VR6 engine shakes at idle speed - causing front seat and steering wheel to vibrate

Cause "Discordant burning due to too much residual fuel or air in the combustion chamber"

Service Remedy "Investigate the fuel and ignition system as advised in the workshop maunal to eliminate faults in this area; untighten engine mountings, start the engine for a tension free position and then tighten the mountings. Put in place twin earth spark plugs - Part No 101 000 035 AB/AA

Does this make sense to anyone??

I am sure it was some sort of official VW site, it had a whole list of faults and recalls for all different VWS.
