16v hubs question and a wheel spacers and bolts question

Need some help pwetty please!!!

 

i have a 1989 1.8 16v

 

Snapped off a wheelbolt in my hub :bang:

 

After discussing the issue with a friend of mine, he reckons it wont be as easy as just drilling it out.

 

So, a 2nd hub would be the easiest and cheapest option. Now the corrado and Mk2 Golf share the same setup up front AFAIK, so is it safe to say a mk2 hub will fit on no problem?

 

he has an 8v hub sitting spare. But apparently the diffs are different sizes between 8 and 16v golfs and a difference between brakes sizes and caliper design. Another friend also stated that when he went to upgrade brakes on his 8v golf to 16v, he need the hubs also

 

So the question is:

 

Can i fit a MK2 hub, to my corrado?

 

Does it have to be the 16v hub?

 

Also, 9.5mm spacers appeared to be too big for for my new wheels to fit on the front hubs, so im going to order 5mm and hope it clears the caliper. however the liklihood there is that i'll probably still need longer bolts as i imagine it would only be the first 4mm or so of the bolts that would go into the hub.

 

so what sort of wheel bolts do i need?

how long are the standards?

 

And lastly, the spacers i purchased were for all 4 stud vehicles, and so, aren't 'hubcentric'.

 

Do i need spigot rings to fit spacers to the hub?

 

Or is that not a huge issue as long as the wheels still fits on the hub?

 

I'm obviously attempting to avoid the hundred or so quid for hubcentric adapters.

Both Late Mk2 Golf and Corrado hubs seem to have the part numbers of 357407255C (left) and 357407255C (right). That is for the KR (aka 16v) and PL engined golf, so if the 1.8 8v Mk2 Golf GTi engine code is PL then it should be fine and you can use it. (If not, I have a spare corrado hub you can have pretty cheap. It will need a new wheel bearing in though.)

 

With regards to the brake question, I think you need the hubs with the brakes cos the 8v cars ran 239mm brakes and the 16v ran the 256s (same as Corrado 16v)?

You'll need wheel bolts that are 5mm longer than standard. They are available from most alloy wheels suppliers, or even Ebay etc. Just take one of your orig wheel bolts measurements to use to calculate the length of the threaded section + 5mm. And make sure you order the correct type of bolt seat. There are two main types, tapered and a rounded / convex type, and the type you need will depend on the wheels you have. iirc you had Sebrings though? So will need a tapered seat.

 

You won't need spigot rings for small universal spacers like that, as the spigot ring in your wheel should still make contact with the ring on the hub. The spacer itself should be roughly centralised by putting the 4 wheel bolts in.

 

10mm hubcentric spacers are available pretty cheap though!

ps. a stud extractor should be able to get your snapped wheel stud out of the hub pretty easily!

Hmm not sure Dec, I've snapped just the little brake disc grub screws in hubs before and snapped a high quality tap trying to get it out. And I doubt the wheel bolts will be softer metal for safety reasons :shrug:

I've done it before with a stud extractor and a pen type blow torch to heat the metal around the stud. Guess it depends on the stud itself though.

i will order some 5mm ones and longer tapered bolts. I'll see what i can do about the stud, Feels wrong driving this thing with 3 bolts. so annoying with the wheels i have on, cant be balanced correctly as keeps pulling to the right :censored:
