VRev6 0 Posted December 8, 2003 Hi everyone, My mate has bought a VW camper van to do up, he wants to lower it first of all but he's unsure how to or what kit to use :? Is there anyone on hear who knows anything about this, i thought you may seeing as you lot seem to know alot about VW's in general. :) I've had a look on a camper van forum but couldnt find much. :D Thanks in advance :D :D
Henny 0 Posted December 8, 2003 Which version of the camper?!? There's loads of 'em... (1946 - 2003!) :? If it's a Bay window or a split screen (Type2), then it's dead easy to lower the back, all you do is remove the rear arms and turn up a spline or two on the mounts. (same as a beetle!) The front needs a new beam installing, or the original beam cutting and a pair of adjusters welding in... Personally I'd go for the former, buying a purpose made lowered beam is a lot safer and easier than cutting and welding an already aging beam. Adjusters are made by "sway-away", but I have no idea where to get them from anymore 'cos it's 11 years since I had my Type2! 8) Oh, and it's CRITICAL that you change the shocks for uprated ones designed for lowered applications else you'll make the van undrivable! Go out and buy a VolksWorld magazine and suddenly where to buy will become clear! 8)

Henny 0 Posted December 8, 2003 Ah... Good ol' Bay window vans.... 8) I used to own a 1972 Type 2, Bay window, single door, panel van with a Twin 45 delorto carb'd Porsche 2L engine running through a 1500 gearbox, smoothed everywhere and lowered OVER 125mm! I miss mine sometimes... Anything that weighs over 1.5 tons and will pull wheelies has got to be worth a laugh!
