buttons on stereo not working, help!

got a sony mdx-m690 mini disc head unit in my car & for some reason the control buttons on the left side have stopped working! the control buttons on the right work fine & it works fine using the remote. any ideas what the problem could be? i've tried cleaning the contacts at the back & checked the wiring but still no joy.....

 

also does anyone know if any sony head unit would be compatible with the sony multi changer i've got in my boot?
