Power steerin shenanigans

Recommended Posts

Right my power steering has been playin up for a while now, its juddery when tryin to turn the wheels at a slower speed, its fine wen im rollin but slowin down and it turns into a bitch. The other day i checked the fluid level and it had lost some, wasnt much like but it was about half an inch below max. Then today wen i was parkin the beast for college i noticed some wet patches on the ground where i was parkin, thought it might be water but it is slimey, like lube, ive never pissed about wi power steerin so HELP PLEASE, could it be the pump? Im not mechanically inept but a bit of a pointer would be good. Cheers boys

Sounds llike more likley to be one of the pwer steering pipes is leaking which is causing the patch on the floor underneath- one of mine is leaking near the join on one of the nuts. Havent got round to doing it yet as i exspect the a power steering pip is going to be fricking exspensivo!

Not to sure about the juddering- does it sqeak or make any noise when its juddering with the window down?

Its the bel that sliping then if its sqeaking- very simple to fix- but a new auxillay belt and that should sort out the dodgy juddering feeling- if your not able to do this your self then get a mate or a garage to do it- shouldnt take more than 10 minutes to do....

If it squeeks, it probably means that your drive belt for the P/S pump needs replaceing... If it's squeeking, it's slipping (that's what makes the noise!) so the pump isn't spinning properly which means that the power assistance is reduced making the steering heavier...

This will be especially noticable at slow speeds or when the car is stationary as the P/S has to work harder to move the wheels due to the friction of the tyre on the ground...

Change the belt and re-tension it, and while you're doing that, see if you can see where the leak is... 8)

If fluid is leaking out, you can take it for granted water is leaking in......it won't be doing it any good.

Might sound silly, but you're not one of these people who drives with his foot on the clutch when slowing down are you? my dad and my sister do that, and when the engine is at adle, it's not turning the PS pump fast enough to provide enough power. (and also it's a toss way to drive too).
