intermittent tapping noise on vr6

Recommended Posts

Happy new year everyone!!!!

Ive got an intermittent tapping noise on my vr6. sometimes it sounds sweet as a nut but sometimes a tapping noise fades in and becomes quite loud. it will continue for a while (few minutes or so) then fade out again

It sounds like it coming from somewhere near the timing chain sort of area or somewhere around there. it never seems to affect the running of the engine but it makes my car sound like a bag of sh*t!!

It sounds to me like its either tappets or timing chain but i dont see why it would be intermittent and it worries me that something really bads gonna go wrong with it.

has anyone had anything similar and fixed it? is it somthing i can do myself? ive read a couple of posts about timing chain noise and listened to a little sound clip but i wasnt sure if it was the same noise as mine or not.

Cheers

Does it do it if you hold the revs just above idle?

Could well be chains. Best bet is to whip the rocker cover off and inspect. Bear in mind that the front guide breaks as well as the tensioner pad wearing out.

it does it at all revs. its a regular tap that gets faster with the engine revs. i hd another listenand i can hear it the loudest down by the drivers wheel sort of area.

i just put a new water pump on last week so i know it isnt that.
