Erratic Speed Dial Please Help

Can anyone help with this... I've noticed that every now and then my speed needle goes mental!

 

First off it doesn't move.. then it jumps up to speed! (sometimes it jumps up.. falls back down, and jumps up again.. does this a few times).

 

But it's really erratic... everything could be fine for weeks... then happens two or three times in one drive...

 

I'm totally at a loss... advice greatly appreciated... :shrug:

Also sometimes mobile phones can cause this if placed close to the dash cluster.

Nokia's are bad for this! and playing with the Tacho as well! God know what it's doing to my Knackers when it's in my pocket! :nuts: :gag:

My boyfriend had the same issue on his Mk2 GTI - I'll ask him how he fixed it and get back to you.

I have / had that same prob on my early 16v - can't actually remember if I fixed it yet :scratch:

Had a simlar problem, speed sensor on the gearbox.

 

They are not expensive. There are 2 types, one with a righ angle plug and one with a straight plug, just take the old one in and get a replacment. I think its a dealer only part.
