2.0 16v starting then stalling almost immediately

Recommended Posts

On new years day i parked my carto get my wife out of party. When i went back to the carand tried to start it. it fired into life then stopped i thought i had stalled it. i tried to start it again but got the same problem. i tried to start it many times no good.

petrol had been low although i did not think it was that bad. next day returned to car and filled with more fuel, just to be sure, but no difference.

I Got the AA guy out who got me no further forward. Symptoms are as follows.

I turn the key and can here fuel pump priming the system.

I turn key and engine starts then stalls.

if i keep revving engine and turning the ignition off and on i can make it run so no blockage in fuel line.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as garages are shut till monday and i'm stuck!

Thanks

Extra bits as Requested. It is a 1995 M. Don't know what the engine is called.. I have not done anything to the car recently. I do have a toad immobiliser but when i have not activated the immobiliser starter does not turn and fuel pump does not prime. If it was a faulty ignition switch would my fuel pump still prime stereo come on etc?

I'll check all the things you have said thanks for your time guys

Where are you mate? What engine??????

It sounds like it may be a monster air leak.

I have done it to myself a few times on KR motors. Had the head off or cams out nad forget to reconnect the hose for the brake servo. It'll start off the fuel from the cold start injector but as there is no vacuum in the manifold no other fuel gets in.

Have a look for split pipes.

If you have a factory immobiliser it could be that.

It runs for a couple of seconds so you know the engine is ok but cuts out cos its the wrong key/no transponder.

edit. read the top of the post now! Not sure if you have an immobiliser.

One of 2 things.

As Gavin says it could be an air leak. Check all the vacuum hoses for cracks (and that they are all attached!)

Might also be the ISV. Check that this is buzzing when the ignition is on (should constantly buzz, starting from when the fuel pump primes). If its not, thats your problem. Give it a sharp knock with a hammer - that should free it. A more permanent fix is to take it off and soak in carb cleaner overnight.

Its a VERY common problem on the valvers (has happened to mine three times in the last year), do a forum search against "ISV" and you'll see what I mean.

could be the classic problem with the ignition switch failing... Depends on how long it'll run for... If it dies as soon as you let go of the key once it's started, I'd think about changing the switch...

I have another idea for you. The closed throttle switch on the throttle body may have failed. Check the cable is not too tight first!!

If the ECU doesn't know the throttle is closed it causes a no tickover situation. I had this on a 9A engined Passat I had. I only just remembered.

I think the ISV shuts off when the throttle opens. Then when the throttle closes it comes back into play. As the tickover screw should be screwed all the way in, there is no way for the engine to get enough air to tickover.
