Supercharged 2 Posted September 10, 2009 Always thought highly of the Ipswich branch of Kwik Fit as I used to take company lease cars to them in my old job for tyres / tracking etc and also had punctures repaired for free (with voucher) before and they always seem very competent and clued up. Hadn't been there for a while but my mates 03 plate MK4 seemed to have a sticking / binding rear caliper despite just being serviced by VW and having only covered 22k miles, We kind of knew which wheel it was but thought it was worth getting it diagnosed and confirmed for free so told my mate to put it in for a free brake check... Booked in and turned up a bit early, they said it would be 20 mins or before he ramp was free so so we went to get some food, came back and it was on the ramp and the guy was just about to take the caliper off on that side so we went to have a word with him about it - he explained what we suspected and said he'd take it off, clean the sliders and regrease and also wind the piston back on the caliper and re-adjust - I was impressed as this is exactly what I'd do before replacing the caliper which he said might be the only way to resolve it which I agree'd as most MK4 have been thruu at least one rear caliper now! So we watched him thoroughly clean and check everything, windback and self adjust, wheel seemed to spin fine so he took it for a testdrive and then put back on the ramp to check again, seemed fine and said we'd just have to see how it went... Now the original check took 30 mins and then he spent another 30 mins on that wheel which we assumed would cost £20 - £30 quid which I'd be more than happy with... went into the office and they said 'no charge' - WTF!?! How do they make money? maybe from lease deals and other parts / tyres maybe? Anyway, very impressed with the service and would deffo recommend to others! Jonny777 0 Posted September 10, 2009 Because now you've just blown their trumpet for doing a great job, so someones gonna go down now aren't they? Not like it cost much to them, but if its good publicity, its priceless.
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 10, 2009 Makes a change someone saying something positive about Kwik-fit. Was the problem fixed, supercharged?
joby 0 Posted September 10, 2009 Glad to hear something positive about kwik fit! Unfortunately not the case for me, went in last week for three new tyres on my pick up £275 . after they had fitted them i was told i could take my pick up away even though the jack was still under the back and the manager had to check if the wheel bolts had been torqued up. The next morning i noticed the rear tyre seemed a bit low on pressure so i checked all three and found 28 in one 32 in the other and 34 in the last one when they should all be 30, if they had bothered to look at the drivers door pillar they would of seen the pressures there :? and now the the front needs re ballencing because the steering is shaking its nuts off
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 11, 2009 Kwik fit didnt have time for me tonight. I got there at 5.25 after finding my tyre was flat after id driven into the town centre. I was told it would take 40 mins to fix a tyre  Simply they didnt want to do it albeit being open for another 35 mins  Went down the road to a place called Alba tyres i'd used before. Said it would take 10 mins to fix a tyre. As it turned out the tyre was shredded on the inside (the bit that sits behind the inside of the rim once inflated), i was due to bad fitting - ill be going back to where the tyre was fitted. I wouldnt mind but the tyre has only been fitted for about 1000 miles and has load of tread. Anyway they fitted me a new tyre in about 20 mins. Damn kwik fit - lazt s0ds. So i would think Supercharged experience was a one off. Ok each branch will be different but my experience of kwik fit is theyre cowboys.
gogsboy 0 Posted September 17, 2009 There is another side to Kwik fit, other half took our old MK3 Golf GTI in and they told her it needed this and think, along the lines of CAT was goosed and possibly the rest of the exhaust, anyway it was going to be £300 plus, I forget the exact figures she told me at the time. I was working away and as soon as heard this was suspisious so told her to go see my friend, who put it on the ramp etc and told her the only thing it needs was a clip or something like that replacing...anyway it cost zero pounds and I think we done another 20k + in that car with no further exhaust issues or emmision fails. Pity they weren't all like the ones your describe, I could have been done with our caliper being freed off properly
wazza 0 Posted September 17, 2009 I've had a couple of good experiences with Kwik Fit First time they repaired a puncture for free even though i said there was no chance of them ever seeing the car again as we were only by chance on the opposite (wrong) side of Birmingham, so 'big up' the Erdington Kwik Fit! Second time was a few weeks ago when i was replacing my mate's Mk4 golf's door but found the spline tool i'd got was too long to fit. Popped into the local Oldbury Kwik Fit and they lent me the right sized tool which did the job perfectly and weren't really bothered that there wasn't much chance of returning it before they closed! So a bit 'whoop whoop' to those guys too! I'd also just like to point out that i am in no way affiliated to the Kwik Fit brand, although if any Kwik Fit employees fancy offering me a discount on new tyres in return for good press i'll say whatever they want
