foggyblackpool 0 Posted September 14, 2009 Hi Folks, Ive been looking at an advert for a corrado and the only thing putting me off was a lot of engine work done in the last few thousand miles. I emailed the seller asking what the problem was and got this as a reply: Luke, basically had a leak in the top of rad that was too big to repair, when it was in for the work, discovered slighly down on compression in one of the cyl, which led to the head gasket slight leak. whilst head was off, the slippers/guides for the chain seemed quite worn and they are usually worse at the bottom, so decided to drop gearbox and replace all guides/tensioners and the chain as well. on rebuild changed the water pump as a matter of course and the thermo housing, few weeks later the fuel pump was groaning so that was done along with the ht leads that were arcing, discs and pads were worn. it was just a mad few months were i took a big hit :-(,,, all sorted now tho. I have no reasons to doubt the chap but my mechanical knowledge is limited so im just wondering if this sounds about right and what work is likely to be needed soon. The car is a vr6 with 110k on the clock. Cheers folks, looking for a rado is getting stressfull!
tyler 0 Posted September 14, 2009 sounds like a lot of engine work but if he has receipts it should last for awhile. why he had a compression test on a rad replacements seems strange but he might of asked for a check and the timing chain needed doing soon any how
Jim 2 Posted September 14, 2009 If it'd had all that work done, I'd be snapping it up! That kind of work really is not cheap.. well over a thousand pounds in parts, let alone the labour!
shaung60 0 Posted September 14, 2009 If I was going to look a it I would let the engine warm up in the drive and then take it for a long test drive. If the seller is happy for this to happen then chances are there are no problems with the engine or cooling. If he says no then does he have something to hide? too hot 0 Posted September 14, 2009 True going by what he is listing it is consistent with that type of repair. Chains tensioners waterpump are all done more or less at the same time-----probably clutch too :) What you really need is proof that it all has been done------not just needing done :( Big bills if you end needing to do it yourself
foggyblackpool 0 Posted September 14, 2009 Cheers chaps, list of work done on the advert says: New Head Gasket, head skimmed, Sump Gasket and Engine Mount New Chain, chain slippers and Tensioner New Radiator, Water Pump, Temperature Sender and Thermostat Housing New Fuel Pump and HT Lead Set Is there anything i should ask?Its a long way from me so id like to get all the info i can before i travel to see it. foggyblackpool 0 Posted September 14, 2009 The worry was that all the work was done 3k miles ago,i guess i should be looking at it as a plus really! Its not the distance more the fact id have to take a day off work to go and look at it thats the problem,im working everyweek day and studying at the weekend at the moment. Im going to give the owner a call tomorrow and hopefully ill get to have a look at it sometime next week.Budget in a leather retrim and ill be a happy chappy! Wendy 0 Posted September 14, 2009 What about Clutch ? Has that been done ? If not, this is a fair sized bill. The guys are better advising kinds of costs though ! These are usually done when Timing chains tensioners are ! Although some cars seem to have had these replaced quite early in mileage terms, so not always the case. Had my clutch done at 125k. Still depends on price of car and consideration of costs of all repair work done so far though. Good Luck.

I would defo being looking at all that work as a plus. Remeber the newest Corrado is about 14yrs old so they all need work doing. If thats been done then anything else will be fairly minor. Dont retrim the Recaro's though leathers for gimps and girls!!!!
foggyblackpool 0 Posted September 15, 2009 Thanks alot folks, ive asked a couple more questions, mainly about the clutch etc and reciepts,so if they turn up then all looks good, its a toss up between 2 now!The other being the met brown bronze g60 for sale on here.
foggyblackpool 0 Posted September 15, 2009 Ok,apparently the clutch was inspected when the other work was done but the mechanic said it didnt need replacing,he has all the reciepts and the only bad points on the car are a small patch of rust on one arch(i have pictures its about 50p size and i think would clean up until i can afford a re-spray and the rear disks and pads will need replacing soon, how much should i be budgeting for that?
