That damned middle headlight screw!!

Recommended Posts

Well, I FINALLY managed to get both headlights out this evening, after trying from 3.30pm-6.30pm!! :bad-words: 2 of the 4 screws on top of the headlights had rounded but got these off quite easily! The middle one on the O/S however, DAMN! It had rusted in tight, and pretty much rounded instantly! So after various methods of attempting to get it out (I had made an extension for a drill bit at work, various other 100mm+ lengths of silver steel with tools imbedded in them), the method that seemed to work best was melting the little plastic "nut" that the self tapper goes into at the very tip of its thread, and then prising it apart with a screwdriver.

Thank god thats over with.

So I've ordered new stainless bits to replace these with, but NOW I will need some new "plastic nuts" that these tappers go through. Are these items I can buy from Halfrauds, or is it a Stealers item? Either way has anyone got any advice on replacements, or item numbers?

TIA :D

Yep, stainless is the way forward and yeah the new plastic bits are pennies from VW - just push them downwards to get the old ones out.

Deffo a bit worth 'maintaining'!! Loads of waxoyl!!

I second that - it's one of those jobs you learn to do only once!

All hail the universal Waxoyl! :notworthy:

And for those who haven't had the pleasure - start drip feeding Plus Gas or Wynn's release aid onto the screws on a monthly basis, until they come free, followed by clean up and Waxoyl treatment - well worth investing the time and effort.

The website I got em through was http://www.stagonset.co.uk/, pretty good range and quite cheap. The delivery (£1.50ish) cost more than all the fixings I needed

Any pictures of the nightmare screws as where abouts it is?

the top 2 screws are obvious the third one is central to the lamp at the rear. there is a hole in the front panel that you drop a long crosshead screwdriver down and this is the hard one to get at if its stuck. if you have never removed them then you want to get some WD40 or equivilent on them and give em a good soak.

I used to work for Stagonset, and their website has been suspended since I left in July.

A number of us have since set up Westfield Fasteners with a very similar service, offering a range of stainless nuts and bolts.

I hope this is useful for you!
