Low mileage and new computer?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

I'm thinking of buying a Corrado VR6 after my parked CRX was hit by a bus and written off

Found one (miles away) that sounds interesting as it's only got 55k on the clock!

Just spoke to the seller and he says it's in great condition all round etc etc.

He mentioned that the log book was stolen years ago (he's known the last 3 owners) and it's recently had a "new computer".

That's got to be the MFA thing yeah?

If so doesn't it sounds a little dodgy?

Clocked maybe?

How many miles will these beasts do before things start to go wrong anyway?

Is it safe to look for a 100k-er?

Cheers for any advice you can offer,

Krusty :-P

PS: I'm in no rush to buy so can afford to wait (don't need a car especially...)

if the log-book has been stolen then surely he must have had a replacement one by now :? ........unless he means the service record book is missing......which could tie in with the suspiciously low-ish miles.....though if you get the chassis number(and number plate too) you can phone VW 's customer services and they will tell you when it was last in a VW dealer getting serviced and also what mileage it was showing(NB sometimes if its had a plate swap it might not show with the number plate but it should show with the chassis number)

tbh it sounds a bit sketchy to me........but at the same time worth following up

as for mileage it all really depends on how they have been looked after...........if i were you go look at it if the info from VW is good but budget on an HPI check and also have it inspected by either a VW dealer or better still a good reputable VW specialist

also ive heard ppl refer to the ecu as the "computer" before so maybe its had a new ecu or more probably as you say

*mod edit - removed your double post - Henny * :-P

Firstly, Welcome to the Forum... 8)

Secondly, don't you just hate busses?!? I hope no one was in the car at the time... :?

Thridly, yup it does sound slightly suspect... BUT the guy could be being completely honest with you about the car and is just using the wrong terms... As Rodders suggests, get the reg number and phone VW and ask them when it was last serviced and when the next one is due... That's how I confirmed that my G60 had been clocked... :| Also, if it is the V5 he's lost, tell him he won't be able to sell it to anybody unless he applies for a new one and if he starts being funny, walk away! Car with no V5 could be anything or anybodies... :?

Quite a few Corrados now have 100+ K miles on them, and, as long as they've been looked after, this shouldn't be too much of a problem... 8) The engines are all pretty strong and take the milage well, but there are weak points that you need to be aware of when looking at them... Fortunately, VR6 compiled a rather useful buyers guide which you can find HERE 8)

Cheers for the swift replies guys.

I'll give him another bell tomorrow and get the reg and chassis numbers so I can check with VW.

Oh, and no-one was in the CRX at the time. I'm still waiting for First buses to cough up the readies though

I'll let you know how I get on...

Thanks again,

Krusty
