G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 28, 2004 Hi can anyone help!!!!! I have been having problem after problem with my G60 since its engine re-build. The problem is.... The car is very difficult to start in the mornings, and sounds like there is either no spark or petrol, it just keeps turning over. Then once it has started, as soon as it is reved, it sounds like it is pinking, then to make matters worse as i drive the car it dosent seam to want to pull away very easily, as is extreamly slugish. the car also makes the horrible pinking noise when driving. As to going up hills, forget it it just dosent want to know. The more I advance the timing the more it pinks, and the more I retard the timing the more slugish. the oil temp is 160!, and the light comes on and buzzer's. I was reading another post about supercharger boosts. Like it said, I get the MFA to pos 2 and held in and re-started the engine, then pressed once to setting 2. The reading I got was abound the '700' mark fluxuating up and down. have I done this right as the post i red said between 80 and 110. I connot find any reading that is just 2 or 3 low numbers! Need help quick!!!!!!!! The car has done 144,000, and has had all new bearing 6000 miles ago. Is it just knacked now and need to be sold or broken up, is there no hope no more!!! Henny 0 Posted January 28, 2004 Sounds to me like you need to check the vacuum hose that goes from the throttle body to the ECU... This needs to be EXACTLY 1m long and has to be in good condition else the ECU doesn't know what the engine's doing and gets the fueling all wrong... :? G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 28, 2004 already checked!, then i remembed, its only 10 months old! so i know it is the right length, VW fitted it when it went for a service! thanks anyway, any other ideas!!
G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 28, 2004 what about if the pipe from the throttle to the ecu was restricting the air flowing, ie, the hose was slightly blocked
Henny 0 Posted January 28, 2004 yeah, if the hose is kinked or blocked then it'll do the same as if it's not there or the wrong length...
G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 28, 2004 I will go and take the hose off now and check, even thought it has just started t osnow here is sunny yorkshire!
G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 28, 2004 the pipe is 77cm long from throttle to ecu, and was fitted by VW dealers last year, and i have never touched it once in all that time!!
Henny 0 Posted January 28, 2004 It NEEDS to be exactly 1m long else your timing will be out 'cos the ECU will be getting all the wrong info about vacuum and engine loading... Get this changed first (it's dead cheap and easy to do!) and see if there's any difference... 8) If the car's actually pinking, it's also worth checking the state of the cable from the knock sensor that's on the front of the block next to the oil filter header. The cable has a habit of rubbing on the engine and wearing through which can make it's readings unreliable... :?
G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 28, 2004 changed the pipe and the knock sensor was changed when the gngine was re-built. I have checked the cable and its fine, any more ideas, what about the supercharger boost. did my readings sound right?
G60JAY 0 Posted January 28, 2004 It sounds to me like the timing is out. Double check the timing marks on all the pulleys with there corresponding marks.
leigh 0 Posted January 28, 2004 i agree with g60jay timings out, engine will run much hotter if valve timing or ignition timing is out
G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 29, 2004 Timing marks are fine, checked both pullys and cam pully, like i said i have move the dizzy and the engine either pinks or wont run top end. Its also a bugger to start again. There is no in between, Any more ideas..., gettign desperate now!! *mod edit - deleted double post for you - Henny *
bigg60 0 Posted January 29, 2004 there are two timing marks on these, TDC (top dead centre) and the timing mark, it needs to be 6 degrees +/- 1 on the timing mark, had the same prob with mine
G60BoyRacer 0 Posted January 29, 2004 Timing marks fine, what about the supercharger boost pipes, or does the blue temperature sensor prevent the car from running correctly is it worn out, any other switches and sensors that need to be checked? ECU?
bigg60 0 Posted January 29, 2004 you know where the temp switch is? well there is another switch next to it , this is to do with the fuel injection, for what it costs its worth changing. i changed all these on mine before i found the prob. one is black, one is blue, pull one off and the car struggles to keep going pull the other off and the temp gauge stops working (you probably know all this but it might help) the one where it struggles, change it, might be wrong reading from this switch
