Options for high mileage engine

Recommended Posts

Not bought a car yet but doing some investigations into possible scenarios. If I bought a higher mileage car and wanted to plan for an engine rebuild or replacement in a year or two, what are my options and rough costs?

e.g. Could I take it to a specialist and get the whole engine 'rebuilt' (I'm a n00b so forgive any obvious lack of lknowledge).

Also, how much is a 24v conversion roughly? My thinking with this option is to buy something high mileage and run it 'as is' for a few years, saving for a full on conversion. But costs would very much be a factor.

big can of worms im affraid

rebuilds can vary depending whats fucked on the engine head gasket,block,pistons.....

a specialist would charge anything from about £500 to £3000 depending on what needs replacing

what can be cheaper is finding someone selling an engine thats been rebuilt then paying to fit, however you then need to be sure who you're buying from :brickwall:

when it comes to upgrading the engine I've heard the 2.8 24v and 1.8 20vt conversions costing 3/4k
