My car has a cough when cold....

HI All,

 

I could really use some help in diagnosing a small glitch with my VR6 Corrado and hope some nice kind person can help!

 

My car when cold has an ever so slight 'cough', almost a hesitation, like i have flicked my foot off the accelerator quicker than Bruce Lee gives Norris a nudge...! Sorry, I digress.... :lol:

 

I have done the simple change plugs and leads to begin with, all the old plugs to be fair were OK, not soiled / oiled etc, the leads were shocking and as a result there has been a little improvement. I have also chucked a bottle of Wynns Hydraulic valve lifter treatment for good measure and again it does seem a little better, but it's still there.

 

There is no evident lose of power in the car, i have owned Corrie for two years and she still screams when called upon once up to temperature. Speaking of temp, both the oil and water temps are always where they should be, the car doesn't burn oil and overall runs a reasonable mpg, so i guess doesn't waste fuel either.

 

Once warm, the car is pretty much flicker free, second gear when cold is where the murmour seems to be, but warmed up second gear is awesome as you would expect.

 

Corrie has only covered 80,000 miles, the engine does sound sweet, never cuts out and I want to get it running right.

 

My areas of guess are wondering whether its

 

a) the tappets

b) one / some of the valves are sticking

c) pistons worn (please no...!)

 

If anyone has an experience of this / can help, I would be massively thankful, I want to make sure Corrie gets looked after in my ownership and if the engine needs to come apart in the near future then so be it....!!

Not sure if this is the same as I get when my VR is cold... the first few times you accelerate (literally within the first minute of the car running) it's as you say, like letting off the power and then coming back on again - like the car is hesitating.

 

DG Autotech reckon it's just the injectors in need of cleaning / replacing so it's on the list to get done at some point!

Thanks for that, I have a family friend who is pretty handy come engine mechanicals so I am going to be leaning on him soon, so that is a good place to start. Are the injectors easily accesable to clean or replace??

If you can get so far as to get them removed, you may be best off sending them to an injector cleaner specialists who'll flow test and clean the injectors and fit new seals.

 

I believe it's relatively easy to get them out of a VR but just time consuming...
