Continuous Idling problems-help and advice needed please

My 2l 16v corrado has always had idling problems, however recently got worse again. It is jumping between 700rpm and 1200 rpm and won't settle. It has no power when taking off in 1st gear and generally no power at low revs. I would really appreciate any help here as I have spent hundreds of pounds trying to get this fixed by a mechanic who I think has lost patience and ran out of ideas!!!! :(

There will be lots of advice along shortly I'm sure but, rather than spending hundreds on mechanics, your best bet would be to use the advanced search on here and give them some ideas.
