Thinking of getting a Rado, advice needed

Hi all,

 

i'm thinking about getting a rado, i've never had one before.

I've had a couple of mk2 golf GTI's but always got fed up or rattley dashes, and doing 4000 rpm at 70mph.

 

if looking at either the 1.8 or 2.0 models, not the fun ones, i know, but i cant afford the insurance/running costs.

 

are the smaller engined models geared so they cruise comfortably at 70 without the engine screaming?

 

and how is reliability overall?

A good 16v Corrado is an absolute pleasure. they are IMHO a little more balanced than a VR6 as there is less weight up front. With a couple of sensible mods they will handle superbly and be quite economical to boot. Take a look at the thread of mine which is for sale (plug plug) These the the things to be looking for. If out of your budget then you can buy a cheaper one a do the jobs yourself. A good S/H is very important as is corrosion - as body repairs can be expensive.

1. get yourself a car-towing insurance or something similar

2. make sure that you have (1.)

3. save as much as you can, and then keep saving as everything will break when you're broke

If your looking for a corrado with a sensible rev range in 5th at 70MPH then you could enquire as to finding one with a gear box mod....

 

This Modification isn't too common but essentially the 02A Manual Gearbox 5th cog is swapped for one from a ASD type gearbox. Takes the cruising revs down to about 3300rpm at 70mph if i remember correctly.

 

Or you could have a go at doing it yourself! lol! :wink:

 

But TBH... even without this mod I found that the car is happy enough plodding along at 70 at around 3500-3600 (in driving a 91 G60). And the standard seats are great for long distance driving :)

you say you have had a couple of mk2 golf gti's? if you had the 1.8 16v golf, then that's effectively a corrado. Roughly same era, so expect rattley dashes and like the golf they rev high on the motorway at 70+

Well Corrado's definately suit your needs better. I had a 16v and it was great tbh, loved the damn thing. Get one mate.

Also wort considering is the late model 2.0 8v i have one and is superb on motorway trips too and mine doesn't make noises or rattles! maybe only lowered ones do that???? :)

Even then they're not that bad unless you deck them as per my avatar lol.

Yeah in fairness youre right, seem to remember now mine was silent before i got excited with the coilovers

Dont think i could cope with a lowered car though if i'm honest, joys of being an old fart and all that I guess :lol: and the roads are utter shite round yorkshire anyway :roll:
