Rewiring of the dashboard and internals

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Has anyone ever attempted this? I'm wondering (with the help of some wiring guides) how easy/hard it would be to rewire in stock OEM colours the dashboard and beyond.

I know mine has about half a mile of red wire in, and I've spoken to Supercharged in the past on the subject of getting the correct colour/striped wire to do the job with.

Perhaps if some kind of OEM loom with lengths of wire, connector types and locations can be outlined we could get some standard replacement dash looms that everyone can use :D perhaps an early loom covering all the original layouts and then a late spec loom for all the later spec cars (if anything is different of course).

This would also be possible for the engine looms (those of us who are still standard!) as long as all the connectors/fittings are still available.

Off the top of my head you could have the following (may not be 100% accurate):

Electric Windows / Central Locking loom linked into OEM controller behind OSR doorcard,

Full headlight and taillights loom including uprated fronts,

Sunroof and mirrors loom (might be possibly to piggyback on another loom?)

Dash control loom (dash clocks, heater controls, cig lighter, etc etc)

Engine looms (2.0 8v, 1.8 16v, 2.0 16v, 1.8 G60, 2.9 VR6)

Just thoughts :D

Just remembered I have a number of looms from the midnight blue I scrapped. I'll be able to find out which each of the looms is, and then perhaps take lengths of wires etc.

Working of connectors and wire locations in connectors might be a bit harder.

I hope you've got a lot of spare time!

It took me days to get my headlight loom right, I suppose if you are copying an existing loom it would be a bit easier, but you've got the special crimping tools (I've borrowed a VAG tool before, expensive to buy) and a wide range of connectors and blocks to get hold of, it could be a real headache, sort of project people only attempt on classic cars where repair or second hand isn't available.

The only VAG wiring I've seen deteriorate badly in 15 years or so is the exposed single thin wires to temp sensors etc in the engine bay and cutting back a few cms and soldering new lengths in is usually enough.

Sorry to respond negatively :( :) - just my first reaction

I think just replacing like for like shouldn't be too bad. It would be done in conjunction with an existing loom so would involve measuring and writing down which wires went into each location on the connectors.

Yeah, I've experienced the brittleness and frailty of engine looms before! You go to change a sensor and the wire snaps off in your hand like a twig :o

It's a must on my dashboard really, it's such a mess under there. I think I have pics of it somewhere, must post one up!
