Bobby 0 Posted February 26, 2004 took my 1.8 16v head down to the local engine specialist to get it skimmed and they told me that the front four valves need to be removed as the some crap to do with angles, is this true cos now i've taken out all the valves and i'm gonna put in some new valve stem seals whilst i'm at it. just though this sounded a bit strange but then again i aint no expert on the 16v engines, my mechanic suggested that i should clean up the valves and bed them in using some cutting paste, where can i get this stuff and how do i clean them, also any tips on changing valve stem seal would be much appreciated as i know its a pain in the ar*e job to do. Can i buy stem seals seperate and anyone have a rough price as i've alreday gone a nd bought all the other gaskets seperate :( . thanks Bobby :D
Henny 0 Posted February 26, 2004 yeah, I seem to remember having to do that when I skimmed my 16V's head... Cutting compound can be bought from most car parts places, and you'll also need a valve lapping tool to do the job.... Basically it's a stick with 2 rubber suction pads on it (one each end) so that you can stick it onto the face of the valve and spin the valve in the seat with the cutting compound... 8) I'm pretty certain that you can just buy valve seals on their own, and that they're not expensive either... 8) Try VAG, GSF or Euro... 8) Good luck! Bobby 0 Posted February 27, 2004 thanks for the feedback henny i've took the other gaskets back and got a full gasket kit, yeah the valve stem seals can be bought seperately only £1.50ish each. i've got the suction thing you metioned henny and some cutting compound. so this is the plan clean valves and use cutting paste to seat them nicely put in valve stem seals (any tips?), use compresser to squash down springs then clip on collets and jobs a good un!??!! is this right. oh yeah and theres some small plastic hollow tubes in the gasket kit are these for something?? thanks Bobby
Henny 0 Posted February 27, 2004 yeah, that sounds about right for lapping valves in and then fitting 'em... Make sure you use the corse paste and then the fine paste and clean it all off properly between uses and especially after you've lapped 'em in 'cos the paste will kill your guides in no time at all! I have no idea what the plastic tubes are for though... :? Good luck... 8)
davidwort 0 Posted February 27, 2004 ...I have no idea what the plastic tubes are for though... :? aren't they usually for slipping the stem seals over the valves, seem to remember those in my old polo's head set too. David.
Henny 0 Posted February 27, 2004 Ah! that'd make sense... :D Live and learn... 8) I always wondered what they were for!
