problem with lights on a golf

Right I've got a bit of a problem with my golf (mk3)

 

When ever I have the indicators on they work fine but as soon as I put my foot on the break they stop. The same happens if I put the hazards on, also when I apply the break the light to indicate the fog lights are on turns on as well.

 

So where should I start?

sounds like a short. Try starting at the fusebox and working your way back to each of the switches.

Try looking at the rear light bulbs on both sides, substitute a spare into each position and test, then move to the next position. In one position it may clear the problem.

 

Sometimes a faulty bulb causes an alternative earth path through another bulb filament.

I'd also check you have the correct bulbs fitted in the correct points (all labled on the plastic bulb holder)
