Any ideas why a speedo stops working and is it simple to sort?

They're mechanical (which is why they still work when you're being towed) - worth a quick check to make sure the sending cable hasn't popped off the back?

The sender on the gearbox converts a mechanical rotation (a plastic gear) into an electrical impulse sent to the speedo. Maybe the gear has sheared, or the electrical connector has developed a fault,
