Coolant types

Recommended Posts

I bought G11 coolant from the dealership the guy said there was no such thing as G12+..

Anyway is there any way I can tell what kind of coolant is in my car already? Does it differ by color or something?

This will be my first time trying to change my coolant , hope it isn't to hard ;P

the guy was talking cr@p... There were 3 types of coolant...

G11 - Thick dark green/blue goop

G12 - Thick pink goop which cannot be mixed with G11 else it makes a jelly like substance which will block up the waterways

G12+ - not quite as thick pink goop...

G12+ is the replacement for BOTH G11 and G12... It can safely be mixed with either, so no problems with jelly anymore, it's also less acidic than G11 which was found to attack the metal water pipes after a while, hence why it was replaced... :?

The guy at the dealer is probably trying to get rid of his old stock of G11 as no bugger wants it anymore 'cos G12+ is better... :|

*edited to add in the blue bit for G11... it's a while since I'd seen any, OK?!? *

'No such things as G12+'! Yeah right, strange cos that's what I use. As Henny says reckon he was trying to get rid of old stock, good ol' stealers, will they ever change?! it's better and fully miscible (...!) with G11 or G12

Humm alright, I talked to the previous owner of the car and apparently he put some "preston" coolant or something in the car. I know I need to drain all that out but im not to sure as to how.

Does anyone know where I could find a guide on how to do that?

'Preston Coolant' eh, sounds like something a dodgy northern mechanic might put in your car after a heavy night on the town! Seriously though, all I would do is take off the expansion tank cap (engine cold!), set heater to 'max', undo the bottom hose at the rad, then let it drain fully. Disconnect top rad hose, insert water hose and flush it through, could also undo an engine hose and flush this through as well. Reconnect all disturbed hoses, Fill system with new fluid mix to 'max' on expansion tank, re-fit cap, run engine for a few minutes, re-top up to 'max' mark, run engine until fan cuts in, visually check level is OK and check for leaks at disturbed pipes. Let engine cool, and ensure cold level is between min/max level.

yup, the only thing to add to kvwloon's post is to point out that you need to re-fill with coolant from the top pipe.... IE, take the pipe off the top of the radiator and fill it via this pipe, NOT the expansion tank, until you can see coolant in the pipe (you'll also hear it coming up the pipe) re-connect the top hose, and fill the rest of the way via the expansion tank.

Filling it this way should stop any air locks from developing while filling... 8
