The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 (edited) Thought I'd start a build thread for my VR, I've done one for most of the cars I've built. Normally I play with air cooleds but they are getting so bloody expensive. I keep toying with the idea of selling her (she's on eBay at the minute) but that's due to lack of time to play. This is my second Corrado, I owned one a few years back (about 2009). I swapped it for a Karmann Ghia, a VR6 as well but it was my daily and the mpg scared the crap out of me so I only kept it a month before part exchanging it for a diesel New Beetle. My first: Edited August 4, 2013 by The Milkman
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 I sold a Mk1 Astra I was playing with last year and promised the Mrs no more projects for a while.....that lasted about 3 months. Found this VR eBay less that half a mile from where I live. Pics from the eBay ad: She only had a months ticket left and running issues but pretty rust free. Horrendous wheels! The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Walked round to pick her up. She had a few starting issues, apparantly down to a dodgy coil. Got her home:
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Things are done in a bit of a random order. I sell bits off and then buy whatever crops up at the right price, so bare with me. Few more from her first day home:
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Interior is pretty clean for the miles: Ripspeed floor mats will be going:
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 The important bit. 164,000 miles, no service history and running a bit rough at the minute.
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 First job was to get rid of the wheels. Ebay was having a free listing day the weekend I picked the VR up so I put the wheels straight on. And someone bought them?! (Each to their own I suppose) Timing left me with no wheels:
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Had a hunt for some cheap wheels, even steelies people want silly money. Finally found some Mk4 golf steels for £50 and put some cheap rubber on them. My poor little golf being used as a parts hauler:

The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 I've got an aversion to orange indicators. I've got a Mk3.5 cab that I'm building as well, I got some all red rears for that and emailed the guy to see if he did Corrado ones. Turns out he had a set ready to go:
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 The MOT was due so run her in to see how she'd get on. Failed, miserably. Mostly due to an over excited tester, he failed her on emissions, wipers, exhaust, brake pipes, wheel bearings, bushes.... I was already collecting some parts, wipers first. I'm not sure what this set up was, but it didn't work. And I don't like the flat blades, they look too modern to me.
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 I got a pair of Lupo arms from Stevens VW Dismantlers, £20 delivered and a pair of Bosch normal style blades, they work brilliantly now and still look original.
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 I managed to pick one of these up cheap: Looks clean under there, no rust:
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Then the battery died. I think it was a combination of not being used for best part f a year before I bought her and then being cranked over alot trying to sort running issues. Luckily at the time I worked for Euro Car Parts so I could get stuff at sensible money, Bosch S4 Silver battery, 4 year warranty, less than £50 :)
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Now she turned over ans started but then died almost immediately, after a search and posting on here, turned out to be the immobiliser. I was getting a bit out of my depth so I took it to one of my customers. He reomved the alarm and immobiliser so she ran but now the central locking no longer works. He also re-MOT'd her, she passed with an advisory on one brake pipe! Went to pick her up and she was running like crap and the passenger door handle had broken. The running looks to be due to the round loom connector (just to the top right of the engine cover in the pic above). It's badly corroded and if you pull it about the engine note changes. I ordered a new connector from VW (one of only a few left in the country) but I didn't realise it was just the plastic plug, none of the connectors. This was a couple of months ago and it's still not resolved yet.
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Usual problem with the door handle. Ordered a repair kit from Dave16v on here, lovely bit of kit and a good price
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Thought I'd do the drivers side at the same time, save any future issues. Someone had already modified it: It worked fine but I changed it anyway
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Got some cheap side repeaters off eBay, apparantly cheap for a reason, they fit like crap. They'll do for now until I get some better quality ones. Much better than amber
The Milkman 10 Posted August 4, 2013 Nasty stereo fitted at the minute But I found this in my stock in the garage I have since tried to fit it and found out it doesn't bloody work! So a bit of research on here to find out what head unit would have been fitted from standard and a quick eBay hunt yesterday, turned up this for £15 delivered
