Personal number plates ????

I've never had any interest in so called "Cherished Plates" personally, but I've spotted a couple still available that might be worth a few quid more than their DVLA asking price if promoted in the right area. What's the best course of action? Can I put them on retention and then sell them, and if they don't sell can I get my retention money refunded? I don't want to part with £1000 on a couple of numbers and then be left with them.

 

Any advise greatly appreciated.

AFAIK your retention money is non-refundable.......besides IIRC its only £25 per year per number,the £105 figure that you maybe have been quoted includes the £80 transfer fee............so after your initial £105 its only £25 per year to keep a plate on retention............tho this figure has maybe changed as i had A2 GON on retention from Sept 95 to Aug 01

yep, this is true. you pay £25 every year, and once you are ready to allocate the plate to a vehicle, there should be nothing to pay.

 

main thing to make sure is that you pay your £25 on time every year. if you dont, its as simple as this: you lose the number plate!

If you buy a plate from the dvla you get a year to put it on something. If you sit on it though, don't forget to pay the retention tho like DEL says, it's gone!
