potatonet 0 Posted June 7, 2004 I have a G60 and I just spent a lot of time replacing the heater core because it blew out on the way to San Francisco. After 20 hours of redoing the interior to get out all of the antifreeze I drove it again. The temperature for the water and oil then were extremely high. I just replaced the thermostat, radiator thermoswitch (for the fan?), Serpentine belt and V-belt, and expansion tank. I turn it on and let it idle and the water temp goes up to 210F/100C just like that, my oil temperature barely hits 200 at that point! Then I drive it around the block and the water temp goes up to 110C/230F. The oil temp the is skyrocketing at 240F/115C my car's water normally runs at barely under 200F/93C and oil runs at 210F/100C. I do not currently have coolant in the car and I have just straight water. This is a minor factor and not a 50 degree factor. The expansion tank also overfills itself when the car started cold at min. And finally the fan doesnt turn on till the water temp in the car reads 230! I dont know but something is screwy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. P.S. Thermostat and radiator thermoswitch are 176F switches. and are there other fan switches that I should replace besides the after-run switch, the bentley doesnt label them all clearly or I am just blind. Henny 0 Posted June 7, 2004 try replacing the blue and the black sensors on the plastic water flange on the front of the engine... sounds to me like your gauge may well be lying to you and these are the senders for it! ;) (black one does the gauge, blue one is for the ECU, they're not expensive 'cos they're used on LOTS of VWs... 8) ) Also, when you re-filled the water system, how did you do it? On a Corrado you need to make sure you fill it via the top hose on the radiator, NOT via the expansion tank... only top it up from the expansion tank else you'll get an airlock in the system which will cause symptoms like you describe... :| The normal temps you mention for your car are actually pretty low for a G60, with the higher temps you're currently getting still being within the reasonable operating range for the car... as long as they don't keep going up from that point, it should be OK... Good luck... 8)
potatonet 0 Posted June 7, 2004 what about the high oil temp. it normall doesnt go above 100C/210F. I filled the system up from the epansion tank first then from the top of the radiator. how do I drain it again and do it correctly. I believe I undo the lower hose and let it drain, but how do I get all of the coolant out? especially without burning the water pump. thanks for the tips on the senders though. they are going to be the next thing I replace after the run-on switch dealie. steveo29 0 Posted June 7, 2004 i always run my car up with the cap off...let it run till the fan cycles on and off, then let it cool and top it up if req anti freeze does make a diferance...although not 50 deg
Henny 0 Posted June 8, 2004 The oil temp on my Corrado used to sit at 115C whenever I used the car... don't worry about it unless it approaches 130+C then you should start to think about putting another oil cooler in... 8) For reference, my new engine sits with the oil at around 105 when hammering it, or about 95 the rest of the time due to the new cooler, but used to sit at 115 and I've had it upto 135 before with no problems... :? The water pump isn't a valve style pump... if you take off the bottom radiator hose, it'll let the coolant past it and out of the gap, so that's the best way to drain the system (with the engine off!)... 8) Oh, and anti-freeze is also a coolant which helps raise the boiling point of the water to help it cool the engine more efficiently... this could explain the extra temp that you're seeing if it always used to have some anti-freeze/coolant in with the water... ;) (And, just for reference, the fan run on switch lives above the injector rail on the left hand side of the car as you look into the engine bay... it's got a brown/white wire on it and just looks like a 13mm nut with a spade terminal sticking out of it...) potatonet 0 Posted June 9, 2004 Well thank you all for all the help that you have given me. I found that I did need the fan after-run switch. then I replaced the blue temperature sensor, it sounded broken, maybe thats just me. after driving it the heat got up to 230 again  after about 5 minutes. I popped the hood and looked inside and what do I find but a hose flange that was leaking. the one that goes on the drivers side of the head, I realized that it was the stock piece and replaced it with one from the local dealer, yay for and 8 dollar piece of plastic that ruined my life for 3 weeks  !!! I also had an airlock in the system so I filled the rest of the system up with water and now the car's oil runs at 95C/204F and the water runs at 80C due to low temp thermostat and fan switches. thank you all once again, the rrado LIVES!!!!!
potatonet 0 Posted June 10, 2004 oops its not over, sorry guys, I drove it fine for a day temp stayed cool all the time and now I dont know what it could be I am thinking blown headgasket but am not sure due to this cars very misterious overheating problem. I do have the air pocket though so the coolant has to be going somewhere, I think its coming out my tailpipe because I rev the engine and it spits some water back there. if its my tailpipe that is receiving the coolant then the headgasket would most likely be blown. small amounts every once in a while of white smoke, like I mean VERY small amounts like for a helf a second. I probably have a crack in something. this car might be at the end of its life with me. cant afford to not have a car. love the thing just need it to work!!! :x :x
potatonet 0 Posted June 11, 2004 . I have the nasty brown color in my expansion tank and its leaving residue in there. some fine micro stuff nothing huge, the problems that I have been having were solved when I replaced the hose flange on the drivers side of the cylinder head. I gas the engine and I get a spot of water or two out the tail. dont know if this is condensation or if it is the headgasket? my car loses the coolant that it has creates an air pocket in the engine causing the water to boil out of the expansion tank, very hard to find mind you. it was running ok for a day, but noticed today that the WATER in the tank is this brown grit color. I am gonna get the thing pressure tested. I can drive it if I fill it up full of water, yes I know I am supposed to use coolant too but until I get this thing fixed I am not putting any G12 in the thing, that stuff costs an arm and a leg. you must love the corrado, small parts, one off peices. potatonet 0 Posted June 15, 2004 I have a feeling that it could be the cap and the fact that it has a bad valve or a crappy seal. I am going to try this and see if it works :?:
