16V downpipe removal

Can anyone advise me on the replacement of the downpipe on my 16V, does the subframe have to be lowered for clearance or will it be possible to do with it in place, it doesn't look like there is much room to clear the steering rack. If the subframe has to be lowered is this a major pain, how many bolts will have to be undone to allow it to be lowered enough. I don't have access to a four post ramp and will be doing this using axle stands. Should I admit defeat and take it to a garage or is it not as bad as it looks?

I personally would say if its cracked or bottom silencer gone just cut it upto bits using my good friend Angle Grinder ;) ;D

 

But yes your right its is very very tight under there

The box has gone , I have got a new genuine vw one, figured the original lasted for 14 years and I don't intend doing this again,the rest of the system is powerflow with lifetime guarantee. Cutting it up wasn't something I had thought of but makes sense, how are you going to get the replacement in though? I wil be interested to know how u get on.

ive got a modified stainless steel one to go in so its not that same thing and should be easier to get up there :)

 

I was going to say that you should have got a down pipe from a g60 or 2L 16v and then had a decat tube made up and that would realise a bit more power in the top end as that first silencer on the 16v is to restricting and the lead to blown baffle's when u rev them to much :(

There is not alot of room your right. I did mine by dropping the downpipe down once loose and then turning it 180 degrees to release it. You will catch my drift when you try it. Hope that helps.

Thanks, that definately will help, I will try this first but I don't know if I will have enough room under the car to raotate it, were you working on a ramp?.

I was unfortunately, to be honest I would go to a local place and ask how much to do it, without a full toolbox I can forsee problems. Did you get a new heat sheild as well? These are quite important as the pipe runs near to the power steering pipes.
