andihaz 0 Posted June 7, 2004 Havent had my C for all too long, and have only put it on the road this week, and have noticed that the front fogs are coming on at 'half' brightness with the headlights on dipped, they turn off if i'm only on sidelights, or if i turn on to full beam. Want to get this sorted asap as i'm sure it wont be long before i get pulled over and fined for this by the local plod. Have made my own uprated headlight loom, which seems to be working well. Could this be something that a previous owner could have done. Or have I been cutting the wrong wires somewhere. By the way my car is a 90 H plate 16v. Any help would be great before i start pulling at any more wires.
Henny 0 Posted June 7, 2004 when you turn on the front fogs via the switch, do they get brighter if they are on "half brightness" ? If they do, then it sounds like you have a faulty earth connection on the dipped headlights which is earthing thru the fogs causing them to share the current with the headlamps (or possibly even the relays if you've put in a loom upgrade) and come on... Check your earth wiring carefully and I'll bet you'll have a "D'OH!" moment! ;) 8)
andihaz 0 Posted June 9, 2004 Well checked the earth cable on my headlight loom, all seems fine, if I unplug it from the relay it clicks and the headlights go out, just leaving the sidelights on, and the fogs are still on half brightness! And yes if i do turn the fogs on using the switch they do get brighter up to full power. Are their any other earths I should be checking, I know that its the brown wire on the original loom thats earth but that just disappears in to the cars loom. Also if I leave the loom unplugged and turn the headlight switch on to sidelights, the sidelights stay on but the fogs go off!! Its as if the fogs are getting a feed from the headlight switch! All the wires round the fogs look standard so I've kinda ruled out it being someone rigging the lights so they do this automatically, like you see on some Imprezas. Got me baffled this one!!! HELP!! Henny 0 Posted June 9, 2004 try this: Turn on the lights so that the fogs come on like they shouldn't... now unplug one headlamp and see if that changes anything... If it doesn't, plug it back in and try the other lamp... This should tell you if it's a fault on a specific side, or a fault in general... If it's just one side, then I've got no idea what's causing it... If it's both, then it sounds very much like you have a damaged headlamp switch or (more likely) foglamp switch...
