rascal 0 Posted June 14, 2004 HEy can you help me i'm an average motor mechanic, i can change the oil and things like that. The problem i have is at high revs or going up a hill my H reg 1.8 16v pinks like mad. Spoken to a few people about it and they said it's the fuel but i've told them i run nothing but optimax... so the conclusion was the timing was slightly out. My question is how do i ajust the timing and by how much, what do i screw or turn and where is it? cheers
coolrado 0 Posted June 14, 2004 i recently had a problem with pinking on my g60 turned out it was a broken wire on the lambda probe  there have been quite a few posts on here that suggest optimax isnt as good as is made out to be appearently it looses quite a bit of its octane rating by the time you get your hands on it as its quite unstable :( someone quoted that its 101 octane when it leaves shell and can be as low as 94 when you get it out of the pump quite a few people have suggested using bp ultimate instead meant to be more stable or so ive been told :? kongo127 0 Posted June 14, 2004 Get a basic timing strobe lamp mate. Link it to the battery and the 1st cilidinder. Rev up to 2000 - 2500 rpm. Set it up to 6º (flywheel on the mark). Turn dizzy clockwise to retard timing. P.S. - Don´t you forget to disconect the blue temperature probe!
Bobby 0 Posted June 14, 2004 timing can be adjusted slightly by turning the distributer slightly after slackening of the two 10mm nuts, advancing the timing should cause the idle to rise slightly which can be adjusted back to around the 9oorpm mark by turning the idle screw on the throttle body. hope that helps :D

rascal 0 Posted June 14, 2004 sorry to sound like a right novice but where is the probe i need to remove?
kongo127 0 Posted June 14, 2004 I don´t know if it´s equal to G60. On G60 it´s exactly here.
stevemac 0 Posted June 14, 2004 sorry to sound like a right novice but where is the probe i need to remove? On a 1.8-16v there are no probes to remove or disconnect. This is a completely different injection system to the G60.

Works great on a G60 - not much use on a 1.8-16v though :(
