Starting Problems - CONTINUED!

Recommended Posts

Since fitting the new ignition switch i have exactly the same problem as before... nothing happens on last click when i turn ignition key!

How can i check the starter motor to be positive its not that?!?

Also i noticed with bonnet up that when i turn key after the fuel pump engages there is a continous quiet (electric sounding) whirring noise from a cylindrical part (label notes: 035 133 455 f - vdo 408 202/008/001) over the throttle housing - possibly connected to starter motor on injection rail? (please excuse my ignorance i know very little about engines - well corrado ones especially).

Any help would be gratefully received - tired of bump starting me C!

hi

sounds like the idle stabilising valve to me (the whirring noise) but im not sure if this effects starting up.

the whirr is from the ISV and is pretty normal... 8)

on the starter motor, there is a thin wire (red and black IIRC) which is on a spade terminal, this is the wire from the starter switch... make sure your car is out of gear and the ignition is on, then disconnect this wire and connect a new piece of wire to the starter's terminal... now tap the other end of that wire onto the live of the battery... if your car starts, you have a fault on that red/black wire.... (broken wire or imobiliser fault would be my bets if you've already changed the switch 8) )

If it doesn't start, get a single jump lead, and connect it from the -ve on the battery to the top front bolt which attaches the gearbox to the engine and try tapping that new wire onto the battery as before.... If it starts now then you have a dodgy earth strap.

If it doesn't start odds are the main live from the battery to the starter needs attention. disconect the battery and remove and clean up the 13mm nut and thick wires onto the starter motor... put it all back together (make sure the nut is tight) and try the last step again...

If it doesn't start this time, you've got a dead starter motor... :?

Good luck! 8)

Im probably being dumb but cant find a thin red/black wire... Any pics of a starter motor with said wire where it should be. Are they all the same - for vr - g60's 16v's - Mines a 16 valver!!!

PICS PLEASE?

It should be the same on a valver as it is on a G60 (which I've got)

On the starter motor you have a THICK wire which goes straight to the battery. On the same point, there's a thick red wire which goes to the alternator. These are both held in place by a 13mm nut. Just behind them (slightly deeper into the engine bay) there is a red wire with a black stripe which connects onto a spade terminal on the solenoid part of the starter motor. This is your starter wire, it fires the solenoid which engages the starter onto the flywheel and also switches on the main starter motor.

I can't post up a pic at the mo as my camera -> PC lead is knackered and I'm still waiting for a new one... Sorry...

Also, unlikely but don't rule out the ignition switch just because you have tried a new one, you may have another faulty one, search for ignition bypass on here for instructions (just to rule it out completly)

Henny,

it seems to be the black/red wire? as i did wot u sed there and the starter motor turned over! Now how the fuck do i find whats gone wrong and where... trace back along the cable? I would like to know if its definitely not the ignition switch - but dont really fancy buying another to find out!

right, if it fired when you touched the black/red wire's terminal on the starter motor to the battery, then you know that the starter's OK so it's a fault between the starter and the switch... 8)

So, here's what you do... 8)

undo the screws which holds the dash cowling together (the plastic cover which goes around the steering column in the car) and remove the lower section... you can now pull the multi-plug off the back of the switch...

Pull this down and out so you can get at it reasonably easily. Make sure the car is out of gear and then connect a wire between the black/red and the black connectors. This should fire the starter motor, so be ready to rip it out if it does and use a decent thick bit of wire! ;) If it does fire the starter, then the switch is faulty. If it doesn't, check for 12V on the BLACK wire.

No 12V = dodgy connection onto the fuse box or possibly a dead fuse.

12V = dodgy black/red wire

Hope this helps... 8)

Sweet... even i should be able to do that... well at least i know how to take cowlin off...!

Cheers for all the help guys... will post some pics of the tired old girl soon - when camera is fixed or get me a new one!

Once all the niggly bits are sorted (yeah theres quite a few...) its wheels, lowered, exhaust and respray... if the wallet stretches that far! heres hoping...

's alright mate... :)

Connect the RED on the multimeter to the black wire on the wiring for the switch.

Connect the BLACK on the multimeter to earth on the car somewhere... (the bolts which hold the steering column on are a good place to try, or find the end of a thick BROWN wire as this will be an earth... 8)

You should read around 12V then... 8)
