Coolant temp rises with hard acceleration

Hello,

 

Finally getting back to working on the C today but it's developed a strange issue.

 

Under hard acceleration the coolant temp gauge rises and the light comes on. As so as you take your foot off the accelerator it drops again.

Doesn't happen under minor acceleration.

 

Any ideas what this might be?

 

I've got a new coolant expansion tank so going to fit that today and change to coolant.
