No more turbo crx, turbo corrado instead

Hello folk i was on here a good long time ago saying that i had a 91 manual white corrado g60 but that i also had a 16v crx which i was going to turbo before id get round to doin the corrado. I also mentioned that i was in a wheelchair which means that i can only drive automatics.

 

Anyway turboing the crx has turned into a year long struggle which seems to never end so ive had to finnay give up on turboin the non vtec motor that came in the car and instead of goin any further with that ive decided to just drop in a sohc vtec motor and either sell or keep all the turbo parts from the build that i can now the proceeds to start gettin the corrado sorted.

 

Right so the corrado as it stands is just the way id hav it only it has to b minumum converted to an automatic. I hav two ways of doin that either fit all the standard parts needed to convert it to an auto or do an engine swap for an audi turbo engine and auto gearbox.

The first option wud appeer to be the easiest but not from wot ive seen as auto g60's seem to b alot rarer than say the vr6 so tryin to find someone breakin a g60 auto seems nearly impossible.

The second option i dont know much about is the audi turbo swap so please fill me in with the audi swap is it simple? Do i need to change engine mounts, i hav a garrett t25rs ball bearing turbo and a front mount intercooler from my crx if i was to use these on the audi engine alomg with the standalone engine managment system wot of hp wud i b running? Is that garret a good upgrade from the standard turbo used on the audi turbo engine? Il definitly b needing an auto pedal box and the interior shifter assecesmbly if anyone fancys donating any parts to get it goin any quicker just mail me. Thanks

Well there was another option i never mentioned above to give me my automatic wud be to do a vr6 engine swap as there where loads of auto vr6 out there, the problem i have with the g60 engine thats in the car is a manual and unfortunatly there doesnt seem to be any auto g60's out there for parts anywhere or at least i cudnt find any anyway and thats me looking worldwide, i did manage to find one being broken but all i cud get was the auto box and the torque converter, i already hav a standalone ecu leftover from the crx project, i can get the interior shifter and pedal box from an auto vr6 but what oher parts will i be missing. If im to go with the 1.8 turbo conversion i better speak to someone who knows exactly what il need again i see plenty of audi tt's for sale but they are nearly all manual but i do see auto boxes which are the right ones id need on ebay.

As far as the engine is concerned I have seen plenty of 20v turbo swaps. The awkward bit may be the transmission as all from memory have been manual.

 

VR6 as you say could be a simple way forward, then I'd just wait a nice auto to come up and save a lot of work/ expense.

 

I'm also sure I saw a story recently about a guy who used hand controls in a vr6t auto, he kept the boost at 6-8 psi to not burn out the torque converter. Think he was in the states, I'll have a search.

Good man whatever i do i dont wanna get half may through the swap and run into problems ive already been through a nightmare tryin to turbo my crx (dont ask me why) the cheapest and handiest way wud be to do an auto swap with the g60 motor especially as i already have the auto box and torque converter if only i cud find another g60 auto being broken somewhere even if its in germany or the usa so theres a quest for one of you, i have tried. I know theres specialist corrado breakers on ebay but no luck there. Can anyone tell me what all parts im missin apart from the box the converter the shifter the pedal box and the ecu. Is it even possible to get a low mileage vr6 engine and box these days?

Well they must exist cause it came off a purple g60, i wud have expected there to be more on the american market but yeah ive not come across another, lets say somebody found one what all parts wud i need that i dont have already

I have a 2.0 auto that I will be changing to 2.0 16v and 6 speed I would be interested in swapping manual for auto parts

ive got an engine and box already the car is off the road as I bought the car for my father who was a disabeled oap and was specifically looking for a 2.0 auto not a lot of them around but sadly he passed away a few months ago RIP.

so corrado is sat outside and I want to build a 2.0 16v with merc supercharger 6 speed box.

so from memory the auto cars have quit a lot different even the subframes I think as the engine mount are different but most people don't bother swapping that out.

ecu this may be an issue as my car is 2.0 8v and I'm not sure a manuel ecu works the auto box on a corrado is not the cleverest of things so doesnt require a lot to control it. think it's only a few inputs

shifter,cable,shifter trim

starter motor

Sorry to hear about your father. Im also disabled hence why im looking an auto, im paralised from the chest down and my fingers dont work. Im running so many projects its hard to keep up at the minute my fleet stands at six vehicles all of which have to be autos and each one needs to be fitted with hand controls plus numerous other stuff depending on each vehicle. If i was to do a swap id have to be sure its gonna work cause i dont wanna get half way there to have to turn bak and then not even hav the parts to put it right cause ive swapped parts with you, id nred to get the parts from you try and do the swap and if all goes well then send you my parts.

Im not 100 percent im gonna do the corrado il definitly hold on to it cause its gonna b my only towing vehicle. Ive finished my crx turbo build but im havin issue after issue if i can get it sorted soon i wont do the corrado but if it isnt running properly soon il abandon the turbo and just stick a standard sohc vtec engine in it and then do the corrado

thanks mate. no problem with the bits will be there if when you need them wasn't planning of starting for a bit I will do a bit of checking as I tend to play around with all sorts going auto to manual is easy enough and ive run 2.0 8v in camper conversions on auto ecu with no problems think its just some outputs.

know what some projects are like my van is one lots of niggles most heat related but that's what u get I suppose with 2 turbo v6 and no real air flow as its at the back. then theirs the lift as vw didn't intend them to go over 150mph but hay if it was easy.

Well ive just got to a point were i need to make a decision cause i just cant wait much longer for my crx. Its a dohc non vtec motor which cause it had no vtec i thought il just put a turbo kit on little did i know it wud turn into an 18 month nightmare. Ive taken it to a different mechanic now and if he aint got it sorted within a month well then i may say f#*k that and just fit a bog standard sohc vtec engine in the crx i already hav the engine but that wud b a sin after all ive been through just to get to wer i am now plus the money ive spent.

Then if i did just throw the sohc vtec engine in it i wud consider doin the corrado and id already hav alot of the stuff id need to turbo the corrado. The simplest thing wud b if i had ur auto bits just to swap the box over and keep the g60 engine, if there was issues i cud do the full swap and run ur 2l 8v engine and then use my leftover bits from the crx to turbo that.

I looked up corrado turbo on utube and i saw 2l 8v motors turboed 2l 16v motors and plenty of vr6's bein turboed. I really liked the turbo vr6's puttin out over 400hp and converted to 4wd theyd give my 600hp nissan gtr a run for its money. Is it possible to turbo a g60 motor? Ive seen cars runnin both a supercharger and a turbo and they rocked. Wud there b much of a difference between a turboed 8v motor and a turboed 16v motor?

yes plenty of g60 converted to turbo. the difference between the 8 /16v as far as turbo go's is the head flow the 8v doesn't flow as well so is more limited on turbo size before you start melting things. back in the day my mate ran a mk1 with a 2.0 16v turbo think it was a t25 with blow tru webbers off a lotus that was 1 of the fastest in Europe at the time.

I wasnt meaning get rid of the supercharger and swap it for a turbo i meant can u run both? If u look up ''the worlds fastest lotus elise'' on utube ul see a video of wot i wud say wud be my dream car, one of the many i suppose, it was runnin both supercharger and turbo.

 

If the crx turbo doesnt pan out il hav a bunch of turbo parts lyin there including a garret gt25rs plus an intercooler, pipe work and a standalone ecu plus other bits and bobs, im guessing that turbo wud b fine for a 2l but far too small for say a vr6 engine.

 

Knowing all the swaps that some vw people have went through it should be simple but i have terrible luck

right I see staggered boost the hardest part is the plumbing as you run a small turbo or supercharger at low power then bigger turbo boosts top end. seen it done but never tried it was going to do the van like that the plan was to run the Porsche box with a 1.9tdi and run twin staggered turbos small,large.

but when for an b5 s4 motor that runs 2 parallel turbos

the staggered set can be done a bit different and ive seen the second turbo mounted some way from the engine and still work well.

don't know if the g60 will take boost from the turbo or if it needs to be bypassed.
