2.0 16v 9a coolant temp sensor question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking for some help with regard to the coolant temp sensors for a 9a - can anyone help by letting me know what sensors theirs has for the temp gauge please? Mine doesn't currently work - it appears to have a small black topped sensor in the side of the head below the distributor with a green & black wire connected to it that I thought was the temp sensor. It also has a sensor on the corner of the head next to the earth point - this isn't plumbed into the cooling system, it's just screwed into a metal bracket and has a yellow and red wire connected to it - I'd assumed this was the warning light sender. Earthing the yellow/red wire to the block however moves the gauge up but earthing the green/black one does nothing?

Any help, pictures etc anyone can offer would greatly appreciated.

Cheers Matt

Seems that the wrong wires have been fitted on the wrong sensors.

The sensor at the back of the cylinder head, above the exhaust manifold is the oil temp. Sender that

You check by using the onboard computer button MFA.

The other sensor under the dist. Is the water temp. Sender for the instrument gauge.

Just swap over the crossed wires and the gauge should work.

Ah - ok that figures. Did wonder having found some snippets of information it seemed to suggest the yellow wire should be the water temperature. I'll give that a try cheers.

Haha - when I went and dug a bit deeper I found veedubbed was right that oil temp was connected to water temp sensor only I then found the sensor the water temp wire was connected to was in fact the radiator fan run on sensor that was fitted on the wrong corner of the head!?? The mfa oil temp sender was hidden down the back of the block with nothing connected to it. Now they are all connected up correctly, surprise suprise it all works! It also answered what my next question was going to be about what the mystery brown and white cable near the metering head should be connected to! Thanks again for your help.
