Faulty alternator?

Recommended Posts

Morning all

Having problems, again!

I think my alternator has failed as last night I was driving home and i found that the radio and cabin fan stopped working and the headlights slowly dimmed until the engine died and wouldnt start until i got a jump and i just made it home before it died again.

Fuses and connections look good.

Any help and advice?

Well, step one is testing whether the alternator is actually charging the battery...

Thanks for the reply. Did step 1 as suggested. Voltage decreases from 12v to 11v to 9v in 2 to 3 minutes while running. Drains quicker when given any throttle...

Yeah which means your alternator isn't doing jack unfortunately. I'm not too familiar on the ins and outs of alternators as it's possible to replace certain bits without a full rebuild / replacement.. but either way I'd say your problem is in that neighbourhood!

I was afraid the alternator was shot. But i think its still the original alternator, so for a 1992 model its done well for nearly 25 years!

If you can get a higher ampage one, I'd go for it.

My thoughts exactly. Anywhere you can suggest for the best deal?

The only places I really buy parts from these days are VW, VW Classic Parts, Euro Car Parts and AVS. It's always a bit of a lottery though unfortunately.

Alternatively there's lots of places that'll rebuild alternators for the £100 mark so worth looking into.
