A20 LEE 0 Posted July 25, 2004 I'd like to use my rear wash/wipe stalk to operate the boot solenoid. There three wires, two constant lives 14v and 6V and a negative. The 6v becomes 12v when the stalk is operated. Solenoid just need a switch live from one of this wires. How to i achieve it? Basically because i've give up trying to route a wire through the tailgate as a bad job. TIA
Andy Brookes 0 Posted July 25, 2004 the 12v will be to allow the wiper to park after you have let go of the switch.... I supprised the other positive is 6V, you sure that not a fault??? I'll pop out to mine now and check for you.
Henny 0 Posted July 25, 2004 A20 LEE, it's easy to wire throught to the boot lid... 8) ;) you need a bit of mains twin and earth cable, strip it back so you have one of the insulated cores only (either red or black, colour don't matter! ;) ) feed this from the hinge up through the tailgate with it open (remove the parcel shelf screw first! ;) ) after a bit of swearing and quite a few scraped knuckles you'll find the end gets up into the bit behind the lights... pull it around , and then tape on the wires you need to run through the lid and pull the first cable back through... 8) I'll give you that it isn't especially easy to do, but with the amount of time and effort you've put into your car so far, it'll be worth another 30mins of struggling.... 8) (I've ran 3 new power wires and a co-ax cable for a video feed into my boot lid... ;) ) I'd have said that using the wiper stalk to operate the boot was a BAD idea.... you'll be accidentally opening the boot at daft times all over the place and could end up doing the car some damage in the process.... :| I'm not sure how you'd manage to wire up the existing wiring to work with a solenoid anyway, as it would only work when the ignition was on anyway.... :|
Andy Brookes 0 Posted July 25, 2004 just checked and you right, 12v & 6V there. Not sure how the switch is wired as I havent got the bentley manual installed on my pc at the mo. If this is the way you want to go, I would look at the wiring to the switch and modify that that to give you a 12v pos when you press the stalk in. You could then wire this as positive with ignition on or at all times. As Henny says its not so difficult to run wires, I use an electritions pull through cable to pull wires through. Best described as a piece of fairly stiff nylon approx 3mm diameter with a ring in one end. Poke this cable up the opposite way you want the cable to run, then tie the wire you want to pull though to the ring and pull away. Makes it dead easy. Andy Brookes 0 Posted July 25, 2004 Thinking about this more, I had a solinold on my old Sirocco Storm, I wired this through a couple of relays so that it could only be opened with the ignition off. I also had a spare output on my Clifford alarm that opened the boot with the second button on the key fob.
24V Renshaw 0 Posted July 25, 2004 Lee, I have done exactly this to mine. All you do is use the switched 12v feed to power up the solenoid. The solenoid casing will be the earth connection so you can use the earth cable to connect to the bracket or close by somewhere. This will allow you to operate the solenoid using the rear was wipe. It will also however mean that if you don't tap it twice it will "pop" every 3 seconds (like the wiper operating every few seconds). I then used a channel on the alarm to power a relay which in turn fed 12v onto the same wire, popping the solenoid. Hope this helps. Its a easy job and well worth losing the lock on the back for! A20 LEE 0 Posted July 27, 2004 Cheers Jay, Just hooked it up. Its the green and black wire to the pos+ on the solenoid and ground to the nearest earth point. I used the rear light cluster mounting points. Works a dream, just need to figure out if i can frig the 5sec repeater.
Henny 0 Posted July 28, 2004 change the rear wiper relay and it should kill the 5 second re-wipe.... ;)
