Overheating since supercharger blew

Recommended Posts

Ok long story, Firstly I blew my supercharger up (should I say exploded).

FridayBeing in the position I was on the road I then had to limp the car 15 miles with the supercharger spine turning and crunching against its inner parts that were wedged into the casing.

Monday I eventually got hold of someone who had a supercharger and to my luck it was probably one of the most pleasant companies I have ever dealt with PitStop Development, Littlehampton.

After changing the supercharger, pressure washing all the pipes and intercooler I had the car up and running again, I drove 10 mintues down the road and noticed the car overheating it got to about 115 in traffic so I did a u-turn got some speed on the road and cooled down the engine.

After checking the fan it appeared to not be working at all, the motor had ceased and it sounded like someone had beaten it with a baseball bat, Steve at PitStop luckily had a spare so we changed it and then noticed it was not kicking in properly at 110, so we changed the fan switch and then it kicked in.

However on my run back to Oxford the car ran all the way home at 110, 1 week prior it used to run at 70 on the motorway, I decided to change the temperature sender switch to see if it was sending me cock eyed info (the new sender unit sent my gauge right up right back down and off the back off the spindel, resulting in me taking the dash apart for 30 mins to sort this out).

Anyways the temperature is still running at 110-115 in traffic or anywhere once its up to temperature, the light comes on its all a nightmare, I am going to change the thermostat tonight and flush the coolant and replace 09/08/04, if any of you guys have any further ideas for me please help, its doing my swede in. edit. aint doing it tonight its raining cats and dogs!

Could it be the water pump not working properly? If so how do i test this?

Cheers

Hmmm... I'd change the temp sensors and the stat as there not much £...

Hopefully not the water pump else the charger will have to come back off again to change it - you havn't done something strange and managed to run the serpentine (supercharger drive) belt and somehow missed the waterpump pulley???

Ok, many thanks for a reply firstly..

The only two switches that I have not replaced with new parts that I can think of is the blue switch next to the black switch, what does this blue switch control?

And perhaps the fan switch we put on which was not new could be faulty or just plain different settings, do these fan switches have different temperature settings, ie do some turn on at 90 and some 110?

With regards to the belt that drives the water pump etc etc etc ... It is pretty much impossible to miss anything off without having a belt thats sloppier than a >>>>>

(I will just say wet fish)

If it ever stops raining I will change that thermostat..

If there in the black plastic housing on the front of the head then there sensors not switches, the Black one is for the water temp gauge and the Blue one is for the ECU, I think they read roughly the same so can be swapped over to test...

Yes, you can get different temp switches, the standard G60 one comes on at 110c but people do fit lower temp ones as well....

Hope you get it sorted....

The fan switches are actually dual switches with different switching points for on and off...

The standard switch's low speed setting is 92/84 (switches the fan on at 92 and won't let it off again until it's under 84)

The high setting is 108/92 (switches on the second speed when the temp goes over 108 and doesn't let it drop to the lower speed until 92 degrees...)

There are lots of variations to these switches including single speed versions and lower rated ones which were normally used on cars with Air-con... 8)

If your fan isn't kicking in until 110ish, then it sounds very much like there's something wrong with the low speed setup somewhere...

If you are also not getting a fan run on when the engine is hot, but the ignition has just been switched off, I'd be inclined to think that the resistor network inside the fan motor has died so you only have the flat out speed setting left working... :?

The above is definately not happening, it only just switched on after 110 and then goes after very shortly after, before the temperature is even down to 105-110

Sounds like the switch me and steve (pitstop) found may have been for a car with air-con as it does only come on once, it was all done at 10pm as an emergency (thanks steve for the help :)

Certainly sounds this way

The fan is coming on after the ignition is turned off so this seems to be working.

As the sun is shining for now, I will change the thermostat tonight, drain the coolant, refill

Has anyone got the part number for this fan switch as it looks more and more likely that it needs one, although it does not answer why the temperatue is running at 110 now

*mod edit - sorted your quotes out 'cos it was confusing to read it - Henny*
