Smell of petrol at idle?

Recommended Posts

I've had this since I bought the car, and was wondering what is causing it? Don't think I have a fuel leak, as there's no obvious leaks (or fire) anywhere...

I remember reading something about the lower half of the airbox having somehting to do with this, couldn't find the post about it though. Maybe I just imagined it :?

Can anyone shed any light?

Thanks

randal

Check all the fuel lines when the car is idling. My old golf 16v had a tiny hole in one of the copper pipes around the fuel pump, no trace of anything until the system was pressurised. Are you getting lower mpg's than you used to ??

Might be worth just checking the oil breather hose that connects to the airbox, that can smell bad if becomes disconnected.

Dan,

99.9% sure the oil breather hose is connected (IIRC the one that runs across the top of the block then just push fits into the air box pipe?) Will have to take a look at those copper pipes next weekend, not gonna get a chance today. :( MPG has stayed about the same, mind you I wouldn't be able to tell as it's always done it. Thanks for the pointers anyway, much appreciated.

Nice 'rado btw :D

Thanks mate :D

Yeah, thats the pipe... I've just bought a 1.4 Ibiza as a runabout and that was making a fume\petrol smell everytime I set off from junctions and lights. That turned out to be the breather pipe that wasn't connected!

My valver was doing about 24mpg (driving carefully) when I had the leak, so I knew something was up.

Maybe someone else might have some other ideas :?
