Driving today and the battery light started flashing, as that had caught my eye I then watched as the oil light begun to flash. Then I lost power and had to pull to the side, but as I was pulling to the side it seemed to find itself and I slipped it in second and set off on my merry way. Everything was fine. Then on the way home it's just done it again. Flipped the hazards on, the engine still runs but if I put it in gear, no power. Switched engine off and restarted and everything was fine again. Any ideas people?

Thanks for quick replys guys. It just had a new thermostat fitted, at least I think it's a thermostat (a sensor that goes into the fan?!). Where abouts is the water pump under the bonnet? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1312&_nkw=corrado+water+pump&_sacat=See-All-Categories D'ya reckon these will be okay?

I've had a good read through all the heating/cooling related threads on here and still can't find an answer for my problem. I've recently had my fan repaired and had it fitted so I can switch it on manually, yet every morning when I get stuck in traffic she's still reaching just over 110 degrees and causing the engine temp light to flash. This often leads to me scooting down the bus lane to get some air through the grill, but I can't keep doing this everyday- it's only a matter of time before a bobby collars me! Is it just the nature of the car to dislike standing traffic- I'm guessing a good ten minutes of stationary/crawling is enough to get it super hot. My mechanic said it could be the head gasket on the way out, but it's always been this way. If I put my foot down and get clear air she'll drop back down to 90. Basically I'm just after advice or piece of mind- is something on it's way out or is this commonplace? (It's a 2.9 VR6 if that narrows anything)

Just had it in the garage as the fan had ceased to work (resulting in an unpleasant afternoon in town, stuck in traffic with steam and water cascading out of the header tank) - seems the previous owner had a passion for dodgy wiring. The mystery switch is no longer an enigma! It was indeed once upon a time a manual over-ride for the fan and after my goblin-like mechanics' tinkering, it is once more.

Mines developed a similar problem. You could never use both the driver and passenger electric switches at the same time, which wasn't a biggy. But now the drivers' side switch for raising the passenger window won't work. Still lowers for some reason. Fortunately she's not a wide car, so leaning over to use the passenger switch ain't a big ask.

After successfully changing a front axle rear bush last weekend (though to be fair my old man did most of it), it sounds like now my back bushes are on their way out. They came out as advisory on the MOT, but then I took it to my mechanic mate and he said they were fine. It's only as I set off and you really have to strain to hear, but there's definitely a creak coming from the back left. I'm just after confirmation that the suspect is indeed probably the rear bushes as I already have the replacements and that's one potential less expense!

Whatever the issue was with mine it seems to have stopped, which can only be a good or very bad thing. She drives alright still. What I have noticed is the faintest of whistling noises as I accelerate through the gears, I'm not sure if it's coming from the rear or from under the bonnet as you have to have the window down to hear it and usually the wind confuses my sense of direction  It's probably nothing but I'm very particular!

A rear-electric spoiler switch?! What would that do? There's a proper dash button near the lights (I think) that lets me manually raise and lower the rear spoiler if that's what you're referring to. Think it only works when stationary though but I'm guessing that's for safety. This switch is well tucked under the footwell, not far above the relays. I would be tempted to follow the wires but I'd probably break something in the process.

Thanks Jon. It had a new expansion tank a couple of months ago and the coolant was changed then too, so it should still be quite perky in that department I'm hoping. I'll check the water level tomorrow, but if it is a sensor/wiring problem, is it a big job to correct?

The engine temp light (at least I think that's which light it is - far left) has slightly been misbehaving. I know it's meant to flash when you put the key in the ignition, but now it continues flashing. Sometimes driving a couple of yards and switching the engine off and then back on does the trick, but not always. Now it just flashes pretty much all the time. The engine isn't overheating so I can only assume/hope that it's a sensor fault. Does anybody know where I can locate this sensor under the bonnet and is it straight-forward to repair/replace. Thanks for looking.

Hello All, I've already posted a couple of times asking for help with some gremlins, but thought I'd introduce myself properly. After trundling around in an old Rover 414, I thought it was time to invest in some power and it was love at the first drive! I'll start with a newbie classic- how can I add a photo of the old girl to my profile?

She just had a new power-steering pump a few weeks ago, so I should hope all is well in that department. It's definitely from water dripping in somewhere, it's the only time it screeches. If I pull over and give the belt a good spray of WD40 she'll quieten until I set off and get a minute down the road. Other than that, there's nothing I can do but run her for a good twenty minutes until the screeching stops on it's own accord. Which isn't ideal... but if she doesn't need them, then I don't really want to buy parts that I don't need at the moment for financial reasons. In relation to the water getting in, I have noticed that when I lift up the bonnet, the plastic casing is missing just below the windscreen, so after a jet-wash all the water spills down the bonnet onto the components (windscreen-wiper motor at a guess?) there, (not having much joy finding the protective casing at a scrappies!) though they are nowhere near the serpentine belt which is the cause of the awful noise. Not sure if this gives anybody with much better knowledge of the engine any further clues.

It doesn't have an alarm, I'm still using the good old insert-key-and-twist method. It looks to be a factory fitted switch but after giving it a flick it didn't seem to do anything.

Thanks Sam, you were right- it was the relay. For future reference it turned out to be the top right one. Whilst rummaging down there, I saw a small lever-like switch hanging down that could be flicked two ways. It was above the relays and fuses (I don't have a fusebox cover so I don't know if it would be inside or outside the actual box), does anybody know what purpose such a switch would serve?

Ha, I think 'novice' is still a rank too high for my mechanical fumblings. Though I certainly don't mind trying. Yes, it is the VR6 (no A/C), so is that link for eurocarparts the right belt? So a new belt should cure all? It's not just water causing mischief? Thanks for the help guys, she's a lovely sounding car when the screech fades and it not nice when heads turn for the wrong reasons!
