VR6 Head rebuild - what else?

My 94 VR6 is going to my local specialist on Monday for some big time work.

 

They're going to re-con the head, change the cam chains and tensioners and check out cylinder 6 for scoring.

 

Appart from the clutch, which has already been done, is there anything else I should get them to do?

 

If it turns out that number 6 bore is f***ed, what are my options?

They should change the tappets while doing the head, make sure they use the mk4 solid tensioners as replacements.

 

Only option for bore wear is to increase capacity, ie 3 litre+ (new pistons)

 

What mileage is it on?

It's on 130K.

 

That's a good point about the Mk4 tensioners.

 

When I spoke to Vince ages ago, he said that they bore out the block to make it a true 2.9. Unfortunately, I can't take it up there, but I was hoping someone might know what pistons they use?

If there is scoring on the bore's, they will need to be re-honed (Spelling??), I was told this is what was causing an irratic idle on my VR6 a few years back, and then told the price of the work :shock:

So i decided to take the head off myself to have a look. Bores looked absolutely fine, but re-built the head anyway whilst it was off. New tappets, gaskets and seals, new head bolts, and a general de-coke and clean. Also had the injectors ultrasonically cleaned...

As for timing chains and tensioners, this is a gearbox off job, so i left it. Will get them seen to when i replace the clutch, which should be done sometime soon...
