CazzaVR 0 Posted January 21, 2003 Hi all, every morning the first time I release the clutch it scrapes. It's then fine for the rest of the journey, no matter how long I drive for. It happens again if I leave the car for any length of time, and it only happens the first time I release the clutch. What's going on? Is this serious? G60ING 0 Posted January 21, 2003 Might just want to bleed the clutch fluid. But if you haven't done this in a long time the new fluid could cause your master od slave cylinder to fail suddenly because the old crappy fluid was all that old seals could hold back
G60Jet 1 Posted January 21, 2003 or it could be the clutch plate cracking up like mine did!!
CazzaVR 0 Posted January 22, 2003 Cheers guys- hope it's not cracking up! It doesn't seem to be getting any worse, but it's still happening. I'll keep an eye on it, and as soon as it starts getting any worse I'll have it checked out.
dan 0 Posted January 22, 2003 The scraping is not uncommon in VW's. It is caused by slight variances in the transmission cog's. I read in an article that VW have been aware of this problem for many years. It was also common in VW Transporters and old Audi 100's. Don't worry, (Don't get a new clutch fitted like I did as the scraping is still there every morning :x ). Dan
CazzaVR 0 Posted January 22, 2003 Cheers Dan, you've put my mind at rest!
Pau1 0 Posted January 22, 2003 Hi, The noise you hear is probably your clutch release bearing going. They aren't expensive about £30 but fitting it will be a pain, as you've obviousy got to split the gearbox off the engine. It's worth having a look at your clutch plates too while everything is off. The longer you leave it the worse it's going to get, trust me it happened to me last year and the noise just got so bad. :? Paul
Blair 0 Posted February 4, 2003 Mine has been doing this as long as I've had the car (4 years) and doesn't seem to have gotten any worse. Exactly the same problem - just does it the once, then it's fine. I stopped worrying about it after a year when it didn't get any worse (and BRM didn't think it was anything to worry about, having checked it over) :)
CazzaVR 0 Posted February 4, 2003 Hopefully getting it checked this week. It doesn't seem to be getting any worse, but I want it checked for piece of mind!
