ARGH!!! Bonnet release not working!!!

Ok, I can't believe my luck. Decided to get new battery after the frost killing it, thought I'd jump start the car and go get a new battery.

 

But for some reason the bonnet release when pulled isn't doing nothing at all. It feels as if the cable has nothing attached to it.

 

Can anyone help? How do you open the bonnet without the release handle?
