16 pin type on Ebay (ie. 2 row of 8 pins type of plug)

VAG-COM can be down loaded from Ross-Tech website as Freeware. Some functions limited or not operational until registered (payment).

Freeware is easy to load and just plug the cable in both the laptop and car.

Thats what I use.

An old Tosh Tecra 510 (c. 1995/96) + W95. It's only a small programme and isn't processor hungry. Down load the programme it will load and run without the lead & car in a limit fashion. For Corrado download the v409.0 version. Thats the highest version most typical EBAY leads will work with.

How 'limited' is the 'limited' capability of the non genuine leads?? Does it restrict you to early model cars and not 1.8Ts etc?

Is it worth the saving or is a pukka lead worth the additional outlay for the better function. I have borrowed a proper lead off a mate before but if the cheapy does the same job then......

There are three standards link standard (not leads) knocking around in VAG. It's to do with L, K & K lines in the diagnostics plug. Each line has modules (ECUs etc) hanging on a particular line. So a particular lead will work but not see all ECU's. Optical coupling interfaces (slow) should be avoided for future proofing and difficult modules (eg. 16v 2.0ltr Corrado engine ECU).

The above were the basic which would work with a serial port & Corrado.

1.8T? What year and then look here.......
