Intermittant abs problem, unable to read fault codes

Driving home tonight and my abs light came on, pulled over and restarted the engine. After continuing driving the light was going on and off intermittantly and occasionaly when I pressed the brake pedal I could hear and feel the pump kicking in.

Got home and tried to read the fault codes, when I turned the ignition on the pump was again kicking in occasionaly even though the car was stationary, engine codes read ok but it kept saying there were comm errors with the abs controller.

Any ideas? Im thinking dodgy wire or connection somewhere causing bothe problems.

check the ABS ecu.............its probably covered in green fur.........clean it up and then re-fit it............mine was doing much the same around this time last year
