Where the bloody hell do i find the engine code?

Evening chaps,

I went out today to get myself a new oil filter and some oil, thinking if i just read the code off and gave it to the good halfords man he'd give me the right filter.

 

Well having a 90 car that has a vr6 engine of unknown origin this proves difficult, and despite me trying to find the code on several occasions I've still not worked out what it is.

 

 

I don't think there is a bar code on the chain cover (I'm not off out to check now anyway!) and i think thats the normal place to check. So is there another slamp on the block?

dependant on which VR you have (ie 2.8 or 2.9) the engine code is AAA(2.8) or ABV(2.9)
